Women's Soccer Suffers Heartbreaking Loss in Closing Seconds at Xavier, 2-1
9/24/2017 2:21:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Cincinnati, Ohio -- Knotted at 1-1 with less than 10 seconds remaining in the contest, the Creighton women's soccer squad suffered a 2-1 loss to Xavier in the BIG EAST opener for both teams on Sunday, Sept. 24.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 2-7-1 on the season and 0-1-0 in BIG EAST play, while Xavier moved to 5-4-2 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play.
The decisive goal came with just four seconds remaining in regulation, but the series of events leading to it began in the final minute. The Musketeers earned a corner as the clock wound under one minute. Striking the ball from the right side of the field with 45 seconds on the clock, Xavier sent two shots toward the goal. The first was blocked, then Creighton goalkeeper McKenzie Meola made a diving save that sent the ball out toward the left of the goal. Meola's save, however, resulted in another corner for the Musketeers, this time from the left side. Sending the ball in from the left side with 15 seconds left, Sydney Schembri headed the ball off the bottom of the crossbar into the net. For good measure Xavier's Tori Doss followed by heading it into the back of the net, but following the match, Xavier administration confirmed with the officials that Schembri's header landed inside the goal area.
Earlier in the second half Creighton pulled even on freshman Keelie Fothergill's first goal of the season in the 71st minute of play. Fielding a pass along the right side of the box from sophomore Taryn Jakubowski, Fothergill beat a Xavier defender as well as Musketeer keeper Toni Bizzarro from six yards out.
Xavier's first goal of the match came in the opening half as Emma Westwater gathered the rebound of a failed clear, then beat Meola from 15 yards away.
The final stats showed Xavier holding a 15-10 edge on shots and a 6-1 advantage in corners earned.
"Today was a heartbreaking loss on the road," said Creighton head coach Ross Paule. "We fought our way back in tough heat to tie it up and had chances to win the game, but were unable to capitalize. It's very disappointed to give up a goal with seconds to go. Just something that cannot happen. Every game counts in the BIG EAST, we left some points here. We know the next game is most what's most important now and we will move forward preparing for our next opportunity."
The Bluejays return to the pitch on Thursday, Sept. 28 as Creighton travels to New York to battle St. John's at 6:00 pm.
