Women's Golf Places Third at Big O Classic

Katharine Marshall leads CU
OMAHA, Neb. -- Three golfers in the top 15 helped the Creighton Women's Golf team place third at the Big O Classic on Tuesday at Oak Hills Country Club in Omaha. Katharine Marshall tied for seventh, Julia Karmazin placed 12th and Karsen Morrison tied for 13th in CU's final event of the fall.
Marshall authored Creighton's best scores in Round 1 (74) and Round 3 (73), which combined with a second-round 81 led to a 228 total that helped the junior share seventh place in the field of 56 golfers. Marshall has now finished in the top 10 of two of her last three tournaments after doing it in just one of her first 21 career competitions.
Karmazin shook off an opening-round 85 and regrouped with consecutive loops of 74 for a 233 total. The sophomore has now finished in the top 15 each of the last two seasons in the event.
Morrison fired rounds of 79, 75 and 81 for a 235 aggregate that helped her tie for 13th place. Her 235 total was 12 shots better than her finish a year ago at the same tournament.
Freshman Madison Murnan placed 29th with scores of 81, 84 and 80 for a 245 total.
Sophomore Kayla Maletto sandwiched rounds of 80 with a second-round 86, finishing 30th with a 246 score overall.
Junior Abby Aeschleman rounded out the Bluejay scoring contingent, taking 44th after scores of 80, 87 and 93 for a 260 total.
Both sophomore Kinsley Smith (83-80-86=249) and freshman Adysn Schachtel (83-88-83=254) made their season debuts while competing as individuals. Smith finished 31st, while Schachtel ended in a tie for 36th place in her collegiate debut. Smith's score marked an eight-shot improvement from a year ago.
Morgan Becker, who entered the tournament leading CU in scoring average (76.67), missed the tournament due to injury.
Omaha won the team title by 41 shots after scores of 291, 296 and 292 for an 879 total. That outpaced Idaho State (314-304-302=920) and Creighton (313-314-307=934) atop the nine-team field. The Mavericks also had the top individual performers, while Katie Ruge (68-77-68=213) earning a seven-shot victory in the race for medalist honors over teammate Emily Karmazin (76-71-73=220).
The. teams played on a Par 72 layout that measured 6,107 yards, battling overcast conditions on Tuesday that included occasional rain drops.
The Bluejays will be back in action in the spring at the Texas State Invitational on Feb. 2-3 in New Braunfels, Texas.
