TOURNAMENT RUNDOWN
After facing formidable opponents in the season-opening Kajikawa Classic last weekend, Creighton will again face tough non-conference tests as the Bluejays take part in the Troy Cox Classic in Las Cruces, N.M.
The Bluejays, who went 1-4 last weekend, will open the Troy Cox Classic, hosted by New Mexico State, with Friday matchups versus Campbell and fourteenth-ranked Oklahoma. Last season, Oklahoma captured the Big 12 regular-season title and advanced to the Tuscaloosa Super Regional en route to winning 49 games.
Saturday, Creighton will play Campbell once more before facing off against Mid-American Conference opponent Western Michigan.
The Bluejays will conclude the tournament by going toe-to-toe with host New Mexico State, which posted a 47-16 record a year ago and won the WAC tournament championship.
Creighton's matchups with Oklahoma and New Mexico State will mark the fifth and sixth occasions already this season that the Bluejays will have faced off with teams that finished last season with RPI rankings better than 70: Tennessee (9), Oklahoma (12), New Mexico State (43), Cal State Northridge (51), BYU (56), and UC Riverside (70).
GETTING UP TO SPEED
The Bluejays split games in the opening day of last weekend's Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., holding ninth-ranked Tennessee to just three runs through five innings in Creighton's opening matchup. The Volunteers eventually earned a 5-0 win in the contest, adding a pair of insurance runs in the sixth.
Creighton then went on to manufacture nine runs on 11 hits versus Boise State en route to earning a 9-6 victory. Blake Ringle and Allie Reinhart each drove in three runs in the win, while Anna O'Gorman added two RBI and scored two runs.
The Bluejays' bats were quited in their final three games, as Creighton totalled just four runs and suffered a trio of setbacks to Cal State Northridge, UC Riverside, and BYU, respectively. Creighton's Micaela Whitney, Sydnee Eck, and Michal Hylton combined to allow just seven earned runs in the three matchups.
Whitney (16.2 IP) and Eck (10.2 IP) maintained respective ERAs of 2.52 and 3.28, and combined to fan 30 batters.
