OMAHA, Neb. -- Caroline Lake tied a season-low with a 78 to pace the Creighton women's golf team on the opening day of the Creighton Classic at Oak Hills Country Club in Omaha, Neb.
Creighton fired an opening-round 318 and stands in sixth place, but is just seven shots behind meet leader Western Illinois and only two shots out of a tie for second place. North Dakota State's Natalie Roth led the field of 60 golfers with an even-par 72 on the course, which measured 5,965 yards under sunny skies on the warmest October 17th in Omaha history.
Lake parred all five par 3's in her round and she did not have any scores worse than a bogey. She stands in a tie for seventh place after one round.
Sydney Gillespie was CU's second-best performer after a 79 on Monday, which placed her tied for 12th. That was one shot better than Kelsey Petersen, who led all players with four birdies on the day en route to a tie for 18th place. Sarah Eversman rounded out CU's scorers with an 81 to tie for 24th place.
Kelsey Johnson's 83 has her in a tie for 33rd place, and her score was thrown out of the team totals.
Three other Bluejays competed as individuals and did not count towards CU's team score. Rachel Grenko shot an 87 to tie for 45th, Annie Pearson an 89 to tie for 49th, and Delaney Benson fired a 90 to rank 52nd in her first home meet as a Bluejay.
Defending champion Drake is in eighth place with a 330, while defending champ Madison Glennie of Drake is tied for seventh place after a 78. Last year the Bulldogs improved their first round score by 23 shots in the final loop to win the Creighton Classic by eight shots with a 633. Glennie led that charge with a final round 72 to win medalist honors with a 146 aggregate.
The Creighton Classic concludes on Tuesday with 18 holes beginning at 9:30 am Central, and is free to attend.
