Bluejay Baseball Takes Series with 8-4 Win at Charleston

After Sunday's victory the Bluejays moved to 5-4 on the season, while Charleston fell to 7-4 overall.
Clutch hitting was the theme of the day for Bluejay batters, plating six runs with two down. Creighton got the two-out RBI party rolling in the first inning working a pair of two-out walks, followed by an RBI single to right from Nate McHugh.
Charleston answered with two runs in the second and another in the fourth to build a 3-1 lead, but Creighton inched closer on a leadoff walk by Tate Gillen, a wild pitch and a sacrifice to move him to third and an RBI single to right by Nolan Sailors.
Down 3-2 entering the sixth, a one-out triple by Dakota Duffalo gave the Bluejays an opportunity. With two down freshman Nick Venteicher pushed an RBI single through the left side to knot the game. It remained 3-3 for just one pitch as Gillen lined an RBI double to left.
An RBI single from Ben North in the seventh pushed Creighton's lead to 5-3. The following frame saw Matt Scherrman and Sailors deliver RBI hits to make it 7-3.
Charleston got one back in the eight, but Creighton responded by capitalizing on a run scoring wild pitch.
The bottom of the ninth saw the Cougars bring the tying run to the plate, but Langrell induced a game-ending double play off the bat of Payton Frehner.
Magers collected the win (2-1), limiting the Cougars to three runs (two earned) on two hits, while Langrell allowed just one run over the final 2.2 frames to earn his third save of the season. Charleston reliever Daniel Brooks was tagged with the loss allowing three runs on five hits in 2.2 innings of work.Â
The Creighton offense finished the day with 13 hits, including four from Sailors and three by Duffalo.
The Bluejays return to the diamond on Wednesday, March 5 in their first midweek game of the season at Kansas State. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
