No. 23 Men's Soccer Ends Road Trip With 3-0 Win Against California

Three different Bluejays scored on Sunday afternoon
BERKELEY, Calif. -- The No. 23 Creighton men's soccer team concluded its trip to the Bay Area with a 3-0 victory over the California Golden Bears on Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium.
The Bluejays improved to 2-2-0, while the Golden Bears fell to 1-2-0.
Three different players scored for Creighton.Â
Noah Franke gave the Bluejays a one-goal lead during the 36th minute. Ricky Lopez-Espin recovered a loose ball and sent it towards the front of the goal where the Cal goalkeeper deflected the ball. Franke one-touched the ball off his chest and into the back of the net to make it 1-0 Creighton.
Following his assist on the first goal, Lopez-Espin added to his stat line with a goal of his own during the 55th minute. The senior forward raced past a Golden Bears defender on a breakaway situation and beat the goalkeeper in a one-on-one opportunity to make it a 2-0 Bluejay advantage.
Luke Haakenson put his name into the scoring sheet with a goal during the 76th minute. Haakenson played a ball to Lucas Stauffer along the left-side of the 18-yard box before Stauffer sent the ball back to Haakenson who kicked the ball past the goalkeeper for the third Creighton goal of the afternoon.
Creighton converted its first three goals of the season during regulation time on Sunday. The Bluejays had scored only one goal through its first three matches of the season, which came during the second overtime against Grand Canyon (Aug. 27).Â
The Bluejays ended the match with a 12-10 edge in shots, including 7-4 in shots on goal, while Cal held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Lopez-Espin recorded three shots (all on goal) and three other Creighton players tallied two shots. Paul Salcedo fired a match-high four shots for California.Â
Michael Kluver and Collin Valdivia combined for the Bluejays' second shutout of the season. Kluver made four saves, while Valdivia did not face a shot during his first career action in goal as a Creighton goalkeeper.Â
The host Golden Bears played the final 33:24 a man down after Christopher Grey received his second booking of the match which resulted in a red card.
Sunday's victory also marked Elmar Bolowich's 97th at Creighton. Bolowich is now in sole possession of second place on Creighton's all-time wins list with a 97-31-12 record since taking over as head coach prior to the 2011 season. Bob Warming is Creighton's all-time wins leader with 190 victories over 14 seasons (190-61-34).
The Bluejays' next match is Friday night against South Florida. Friday's match is part of Creighton's annual Socctoberfest. The Bluejays and Bulls will kickoff at 7:30 p.m., following a Creighton women's soccer match against UMKC that begins at 5 p.m.Â
