Junior wins her second meet of the season
NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- A record-setting performance from junior Emily Martin helped the Creighton women's cross country team take fifth place overall in the Women's 5K Gold race at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational on Friday at the Notre Dame Golf Course. The Bluejay team was able to just beat out Iowa by one point for fifth place and were just five points behind Idaho State for fourth.
Northern Iowa claimed first place with a score of 86 with Temple following behind it with a score of 137. Saint Louis rounded out the top three with a 186. Creighton also defeated two BIG EAST opponents; Butler who finished 15th, and DePaul who finished 21st.
Martin led the way for Creighton as she took first place out of 203 finishers. Martin ran a time of 16:58.1, breaking Lauren Ogg's previous school record for a 5K race by seven seconds. Martin's finish shattered her previous best 5K time of 17:14, done last year. Martin beat out Jenica Dodge of Idaho State by a margin of 6.7 seconds. Also of note Martin finished two places ahead of Bowling Green junior Rachel Walny by 11.8 seconds, who was a NCAA qualifier in the 10K last year. Martin's victory was her second of the fall, joining her Augustana Twilight title on September 1st.
Next for CU in 22nd place was Adriana Kammerer who finished with a career-best time of 17:50.8. Megan Paule ran 18:16.5 which earned her the 49th place. Next was Grace Mimmack who finished 63rd with a time of 18:29.9, and following closely was Maile Shigemasa in 65th, running a 18:32.8. Ashlyn Glann finished 128th with a time of 19:16.5.
The team's next meet will be the BCU Invite on October 7th at 10 AM. The race will happen at Adam's Nature Preserve in McCook Lake, S.D.
