Cross country standout finished second at Sundodger Invitational last Saturday
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton standout Emily Martin was named BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week in cross country for the second time in three weeks, league officials announced on Tuesday. The junior was previously honored on Sept. 6th after winning the Augustana Twilight meet to open the fall.
A St. Charles, Ill., native, Martin finished second at the Sundodger Invitational in Seattle, Wash., with a time of 20:34.41 at the 6K Lincoln Park Course on Friday. Martin was just five seconds behind Washington's Amy-Eloise Neal (20:29.87), who finished eighth in last year's NCAA Cross Country Championship.
Martin's time was five seconds ahead of the clocking by Washington's Isobel Batt-Doyle, who took 12th at the NCAA Championships in the 10K and was 109th at last year's Cross Country Championships.
Coach Matt Rogers after the meet called the results of Martin "unprecedented", adding "she's clearly a contender for a BIG EAST title next month."
Martin has now led CU in each of the last eight races she's participated in. Her time was the second-fastest 6K in program history, and her best mark at the distance by 32 seconds.
Creighton returns to the course on Saturday, Sept. 30, at the ND/Joe Piane Invitational.
