Before Record Crowd, Women's Soccer Blitzes UNO 3-1

Omaha, Neb. -- The Creighton women's soccer team delighted the program record crowd of 2,308 with three first-half goals as the Bluejays waltzed past Nebraska-Omaha 3-1 on Saturday, Sept. 16.
The win pushed the Bluejays to 2-6-1 at the conclusion of non-conference play, while UNO fell to 2-5-1 overall.
Creighton dominated possession throughout the first 15 minutes of the match, resulting in two early goals.
The first goal of the match came in the sixth minute as freshman Haylee Blach served a ball to the box from 25 yards out on the right side. Blach's pass found the head of sophomore Ashleigh Cearlock, who headed it past UNO keeper Erin Bunker at the 5:16 mark.
The Bluejay offensive pressure yielded a second goal in the 14th minute (13:18) as sophomore Taryn Jakubowski was dragged down in the box by Maverick Lydia Holtmann to earn a penalty kick. The Illinois native took full advantage by blasting in her third goal of the season to put Creighton up 2-0.
While the Mavericks gathered themselves to make the rest of the half competitive, junior Kaira Houser dazzled fans with by beating two Maverick defenders for an unassisted goal in the 42nd minute (41:12) to send the Bluejays to halftime up 3-0. Houser bested one Maverick defender outside the six-yard goal box, then beat another along the left corner before beating Bunker from four yards out.
Coming out of halftime the two teams played just three minutes before lightning sent both squads back to the locker rooms for a 42 minute delay. Once play resumed, the UNO offense began attacking with renewed energy as the Mavericks got on the scoreboard in the 66th minute (65:03). Carlie Cook set the play in motion by centering a ball from the left side to Abby Meader for a goal from eight yards out.
The Bluejays outshot the Mavericks 15-8. Creighton also held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
The crowd of 2,308 significantly bested the previous record of 1,678 set on Sept. 20, 2013 against UNO.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 24 as the Bluejays open BIG EAST play at Xavier. The match is scheduled to kick-off at noon (CT).
