Martin finishes ahead of 12th-place finisher from last year's NCAA Championships
Junior Emily Martin's runner-up finish at the Sundodger Invitational in Seattle highlighted a busy day for the Creighton Cross Country programs.
Creighton had eight women compete at the Sundodger Invitational in Seattle, Wash., and sent two women to Lincoln, Neb., for the Woody Greeno/Dirksen Invitational. The Bluejays also had one men's runner compete in Lincoln at the Woody Greeno/Dirksen Invitational.
Martin finished second with a time of 20:34.41 on the 6K Lincoln Park Course, just five seconds behind Washington's Amy-Eloise Neal (20:29.87), who finished eighth in last year's NCAA Cross Country Championship. Martin's time was five seconds ahead of the clocking by Washington's Isobel Batt-Doyle, who took 12th at the NCAA Championships in the 10K and was 109th at last year's Cross Country Championships.
Coach Matt Rogers after the meet called the results of Martin "unprecedented", adding "she's clearly a contender for a BIG EAST title next month.".
Martin has now led CU in each of the last eight races she's participated in. Her time was the second-fastest 6K in program history, and her best mark at the distance by 32 seconds.
Junior Megan Paule was the second runner to cross the finish line for the Bluejays, 22nd overall, with a time of 21:46.70. Classmate Adriana Kammerer (21:52.44) took 24th place, while seniors Grace Mimmack (28th; 22:04.78) and Maile Shigemasa (33rd; 22:13.21) rounded out the Bluejay scoring contingent.
The meet featured 78 runners, with Creighton placing fourth of nine squads in the team standings. Washington won the meet with a team score of 22, besting Oregon State (66), Nevada (72) and Creighton (84).
Closer to home at the Woody Greeno/Dirksen meet, freshman Caroline Pass finished 45th with a time of 24:37.1 on the 6K course at Pioneers Park. Mairead Nash placed 66th with a 27:37.5 clocking. Iowa's Andrea Shine won the race of 68 women with a time of 21:31.9. South Dakota won the team title with five of the top eight finishers.
On the men's side, freshman Christopher Smith placed 56th, completing the 8K course in 30:33.8. Nathan Mylenek led a 1-2 finish for Iowa, besting the field of 56 with a time of 25:42.8. Iowa also won the team title with 29 points, topping Nebraska's 51.
The Creighton women return to the course on Sept. 30 at the ND/Joe Piane Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind. The Bluejay men will compete on that same day in Fayetteville, Ark., at the Chile Pepper Festival.
