OMAHA, Neb. -- Fresh off a 3-0 start that included a road win at third-ranked Washington, the Creighton Volleyball team has ascended to its highest ranking in the AVCA Coaches poll in program history. The Bluejays rose two spots and are seventh in today's poll, eclipsing the previous best of ninth in the rankings done twice previously.
Stanford earned the top spot in the ranking, just ahead of Minnesota. Florida surged from 12th to third after a pair of top-five wins last weekend. Texas is fourth, followed by Penn State and Wisconsin. After Creighton at No. 7 is Washington, Kansas and BYU.
In other polls released on Monday, the Bluejays are fourth in the
PrepVolleyball.com rankings, and sixth in the new
VolleyMob.com poll.
Creighton is 35-10 all-time when playing as a ranked team, and 4-6 when facing another ranked team while ranked. The Bluejays have now been ranked in 22 all-time polls, including each of the last eight editions.
The Bluejays opened their 2017 season last weekend with wins in Seattle over Saint Mary's (3-0), Pitt (3-0) and then-No. 3 Washington (3-1). It was the first tournament title for the Bluejays since the 2014 Bluejay Invitational.
Creighton hosts the Bluejay Invitational presented by First National Bank on Sept. 1-2, which also includes No. 13 Kentucky, No. 18 USC and vote-getter Northern Iowa. All four teams are 3-0 with a victory over a ranked team. Play starts Friday at 4:30 pm when USC meets Northern Iowa, followed by Creighton's home opener vs. Kentucky at 7 pm. Saturday's action features Northern Iowa vs. Kentucky at 10 am, Creighton vs. USC at 12:30 pm, Kentucky vs. USC at 6 pm and Creighton vs. UNI at 8 pm.
"It's going to be the best volleyball in the country," said Creighton coach
Kirsten Bernthal Booth. "Even if you're not a Creighton fan, you should make your way to Omaha and hopefully you'll morph into a Creighton fan. Every match will be awesome and our facility should be rocking. It'll be a blast."
