Golden Goal Lifts No. 14 Men's Soccer Past Grand Canyon

Marios Lomis scored first goal as a Bluejay during the 106th minute
OMAHA, Neb. -- Marios Lomis scored a golden goal during the 106th minute to help the No. 14 Creighton men's soccer team defeat Grand Canyon 1-0 on Sunday night at Morrison Stadium.
Joel Rydstrand sent a corner kick towards the far post where Lomis headed the ball into the back of the net for the game-ending goal to lift the Bluejays to their first victory of the 2017 season.
Lomis reentered the match moments before the corner kick and game-winning goal.
Creighton is now 1-1-0, while Grand Canyon fell to 0-2-0.
The Bluejays controlled the offensive possession throughout the entirety of regulation and both overtimes, but managed only three shots on goal during 105 minutes and nine seconds of play.Â
Overall, Creighton ended the match with a 23-5 edge in shots and 12-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Sven Koenig and Rydstrand each recorded four shots, while 11 different Creighton players had at least one shot.Â
During the 76th minute Rydstrand had a chance to give the Bluejays the lead during regulation with the squad's best scoring opportunity of the second half. After Noah Franke delivered a pass from the end line toward Rydstrand at the top of the 18-yard box, Rydstrand fired a shot towards the goal, but a Grand Canyon defender put his foot on the ball before the ball made it to the goalkeeper.Â
Creighton had a chance to end the match during the first minute of overtime. Following the start of extra time, Daniel Ribas delivered a pass in the middle of the penalty area to Franke who missed a shot to the left side of the goal by a couple of feet.
Rydstrand tallied a shot on goal during the 96th minute forcing Grand Canyon goalkeeper Corey Marques to make his first save since the first half.
Mitch LaGro had a chance to end the match off of a corner kick during the 102nd minute, but the junior's shot hit the crossbar.Â
The Bluejays held an 8-0 advantage in shots during the extra time.Â
Creighton senior Michael Kluver needed to make only one save to preserve a cleansheet. His lone save of the night came during the 57th minute when Grand Canyon's Marco Afonso sent a shot towards the goal before Kluver made a diving save.
Kluver recorded his first shutout as a Bluejay on Sunday night during his second career start.Â
Creighton and Grand Canyon combined for 29 fouls and four yellow cards on Sunday night.Â
The Bluejays travel to California next weekend for a pair of matches. Creighton's first match of the road trip is in Palo Alto, Calif. against two-time defending national champion No. 1 Stanford on Friday, Sept. 1 at 9 p.m. (CST). The Bluejays will also play California in Berekley, Calif. on Sept. 3 at 3 p.m. (CST).
