No. 14 Men's Soccer Falls To No. 17 Virginia Tech 2-0 To Begin Regular Season

Creighton held a 19-7 edge in shots and 11-2 advantage in corner kicks
OMAHA, Neb. – The No. 14 Creighton men's soccer team fell to No. 17 Virginia Tech 2-0 on Friday night at Morrison Stadium during the first match of the regular season.
The Bluejays fell to 0-1-0, while the Hokies improved to 1-0-0.
Creighton held a 9-3 advantage in shots and 7-1 edge in corner kicks during the first half, but Virginia Tech scored the lone goal during the opening 45 minutes.
During the 32nd minute, the Hokies' Rory Slevin sent a free ball from about 25 yards out into the six-yard box where Collin Verfurth headed the ball past Bluejay goalkeeper Michael Kluver to give Virginia Tech a one-goal lead.
Creighton's Julius Fohr and Akeem Ward each had shots on goal during the final five minutes of the opening half, but Virginia Tech goalkeeper Ben Lundgaard made two of his three first-half saves to preserve the Hokies' lead.
The Bluejays continued their attack during the final 45 minutes of regulation. Marios Lomis created Creighton's first opportunity less than five minutes into the second half but his shot was blocked before reaching the opposing goalie.
Joel Rydstrand also fired a pair of shots towards the Virginia Tech net but Lundgaard made two saves to keep the Hokies in front on the scoreboard, as Creighton had 10 second-half shots, including five on goal.
Lundgaard ended the match with eight saves to keep the Bluejays out of the goal column.
During the 85th minute the Hokies extended their lead with a goal from James Kasak. Elias Tamburini sent a cross towards middle of the box where Kasak headed the ball into the net to make it 2-0 Virginia Tech.
The Bluejays sent three shots towards the goal during the final five minutes but could not find the back of the net to cut into the deficit.
Ricky Lopez-Espin ended the night with a match-high six shots, while seven different Creighton players recorded at least one shot on goal.

Creighton suffered its first loss by two goals since Sept. 25, 2012 against Tulsa (2-0).
The Bluejays also lost their season-opener for the first time since 2006 (1-0 in 2OT vs. No. 12 Indiana). Additionally, Creighton fell during its home-opener for the first time since 1995 (3-1 vs. No. 20 Duke). The Bluejays are now 19-3-6 during their first match of the season since 1990 and 26-4-5 all-time during home-opening matches.
Creighton returns to the pitch at Morrison Stadium on Sunday night. The Bluejays will host Grand Canyon at 7 p.m.
