White team wins in four sets
OMAHA, Neb. -- The ninth-ranked Creighton Volleyball team hit the floor in a public setting for the first time on Friday night with the program's annual Blue-White Scrimmage. The teams played to four sets, with the "White" team beating the "Blue" team by scores of 25-21, 25-14, 22-25, 15-12.
All 13 current Bluejays, plus alum Amanda Foje and assistant coaches Ryan Meek and Drew Davis saw extensive action in the contest. Seven of the Bluejays participated on both the Blue and the White team in various sets.
Marysa Wilkinson led the White squad with 13 kills and three blocks to help secure the victory, with Preseason All-BIG EAST outside hitters Taryn Kloth and Jaali Winters both contributing double-doubles as well. Volunteer assistant coach Drew Davis led the Blue team with a match-best 24 kills on 66 swings.
The White team had 46 kills, five aces and 48 digs on .239 hitting while the Blue club finished with 41 kills, four aces and 44 digs on .144 hitting.
Both true freshmen played well while displaying why they were part of a top-25 recruiting class, as Alexa Roumeliotis and Naomi Hickman combined for five aces, eight digs and six kills.
"I saw a lot of good things," noted 15th-year head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. "We moved people around so you got to see people playing a lot of positions...I feel better than some years after Blue-White night. There's a lot of good things to build off of, but we have a long ways to go."
Creighton returns to the court next Friday for a 6 pm exhibition match at Kansas State. The regular-season begins two weeks from today with a 5 pm Central match in Seattle, Wash., against Saint Mary's.
