PULA, Croatia -- A pair of Creighton Volleyball players won medals on Friday at the European Global Challenge. Jaali Winters helped the U.S. Women's Collegiate National Team-Europe to a gold medal, while Jaclyn Taylor's BIP Midwest team won the bronze medal. The matches took place in Pula, Croatia, and wrapped up a 12-team event that featured 32 matches over four days.
Winters' team won the title with a 3-0 victory over Mountain West Conference, topping a team of United States players who perform collegiately in the MWC by scores of 25-15, 25-15 and 25-13. Winters started the match and finished with two kills and a block. She finished the event with 27 kills and 34 points, fourth on the team in each category.

Taylor's team won third place on Friday morning, sweeping a best-of-3 match against Nova KBM (Slovenia). Official stats were not kept, but White and Blue Review contributor Matt DeMarinis tracked the match and credited Taylor with 17 assists, six digs, three blocks, two kills and an ace in the 25-21, 25-16 win. Taylor's team finished the week going 5-2, with both losses coming against Winters' CNT-Europe club that went on to win the event after finishing 6-0 overall. Of the three sets lost by CNT-Europe, two came against BIP Midwest.
Following the title match, Closing Ceremonies took place at Hotel Pula before the teams return home on Saturday. Both Winters and Taylor's teams will stop in Venice, Italy, en route to returning to the United States.
Winters was named MVP of the 2016 BIG EAST Championship and is well on her way to becoming the most decorated student-athlete in program history. She's been named First Team All-BIG EAST and AVCA All-American twice each, and last December the Ankeny, Iowa, native was named to the NCAA Tournament's All-Austin Regional squad. Taylor has yet to play in a match that counts for CU after redshirting during her initial season on The Hilltop last fall. The St. Charles, Ill., native showed a glimpse of her potential last fall when she had 35 assists and nine digs in the annual Blue-White Scrimmage, and earlier this spring set the Bluejays to a set victory over Wisconsin.
The mission of the European Global Challenge is to give American players experience playing international teams with FIVB rules. The tournament is designed to match up teams from North America with teams from Europe. Teams stay in the beach front Hotel Pula to encourage a cultural exchange between players and coaches. The hotel is perfectly positioned within walking distance to both the competition arena and the crystal teal water of the Adriatic Sea. The town of Pula Croatia is marked by 3,000 year old Roman ruins including one of the last remaining fully intact Roman Colosseums in the world dating back to 68 AD – which is where the tournament's opening ceremony will take place.Â
Winters and Taylor are two of four Creighton volleyball players to spend time this summer with USA Volleyball or overseas. Libero Brittany Witt ventured to Thailand with USA Volleyball in May, while Taryn Kloth recently returned after participating with USA Volleyball in Minneapolis.
Creighton (29-7 last year) is three-time defending BIG EAST regular-season and tournament champion, last year becoming the first volleyball team in conference history to go 18-0 in league play. The Bluejays have won 28 straight contests against league competition and will return three All-Americans among five starters and 11 letterwinners.
