PULA, Croatia -- Creighton Volleyball teammates Jaali Winters and Jaclyn Taylor crossed paths in Pula, Croatia, for the second time in as many days at the European Global Challenge on Thursday. Both were on winning teams in the morning quarterfinal round, setting up a rematch in the semifinals. As was the case on Wednesday, it was the U.S. Women's Collegiate National Team-Europe featuring Winters that defeated the BIP Midwest club that includes Taylor.
The day started with Winters' CNT-Europe team played Falconara (Italy) at 3:30 am CST on Thursday morning. After losing the first set 25-15, CNT-Europe won the final three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-15, 27-25. Winters played in parts of the first two sets and finished with one kill in eight swings. Courtney Schwan, who stars at Washington, led CNT-Europe with 23 kills and added four blocks and an ace.
Taylor began her morning with a tightly-contested 3-2 win over Czech U18 (21-25, 25-17, 25-20, 18-25, 15-5). Official stats were unavailable, but White & Blue Review writer Matt DeMarinis tracked the match and credited Taylor with seven digs and six assists.
The semifinal rematch between CNT-Europe and BIP Midwest was a best-of-5 sets contest. CNT-Europe took a 2-0 lead with 25-19 and 25-15 victories before BIP Midwest extended the match by virtue of a 25-19 victory. In the fourth set, CNT-Europe overcame a 16-14 deficit to win, 25-20, improving to 5-0 on the week in Croatia. Winters played in just the third set and had one kill in five swings, while Taylor came off the bench in both the second and fourth sets but did not record any kills or blocks. Schwan had a match-high 19 kills to once again lead CNT-Europe.
Taylor will play for third place on Friday morning at 6 am Central in a best-of-3 sets match against Nova KBM (Slovenia), while Winters plays for the title in a best-of-5 sets match on Friday at Noon Central versus Mountain West Conference, a team of United States players who perform collegiately in the MWC. Both matches will be video webcast live on Court 1 at http://bringitusa.com/gc2017/livestream. Taylor wears No. 3 while Winters will wear No. 6. The free video feed is of a singular static camera and does not have graphics, replays or a score visible.
Following the final match, Closing Ceremonies will take place at Hotel Pula before the teams return home on Saturday. Both Winters and Taylor's teams will stop in Venice, Italy, en route to returning to the United States.
Winters was named MVP of the 2016 BIG EAST Championship and is well on her way to becoming the most decorated student-athlete in program history. She's been named First Team All-BIG EAST and AVCA All-American twice each, and last December the Ankeny, Iowa, native was named to the NCAA Tournament's All-Austin Regional squad. Taylor has yet to play in a match that counts for CU after redshirting during her initial season on The Hilltop last fall. The St. Charles, Ill., native showed a glimpse of her potential last fall when she had 35 assists and nine digs in the annual Blue-White Scrimmage, and earlier this spring set the Bluejays to a set victory over Wisconsin.
The mission of the European Global Challenge is to give American players experience playing international teams with FIVB rules. The tournament is designed to match up teams from North America with teams from Europe. Teams stay in the beach front Hotel Pula to encourage a cultural exchange between players and coaches. The hotel is perfectly positioned within walking distance to both the competition arena and the crystal teal water of the Adriatic Sea. The town of Pula Croatia is marked by 3,000 year old Roman ruins including one of the last remaining fully intact Roman Colosseums in the world dating back to 68 AD – which is where the tournament's opening ceremony will take place.Â
Winters and Taylor are two of four Creighton volleyball players to spend time this summer with USA Volleyball or overseas. Libero Brittany Witt ventured to Thailand with USA Volleyball in May, while Taryn Kloth recently returned after participating with USA Volleyball in Minneapolis.
Creighton (29-7 last year) is three-time defending BIG EAST regular-season and tournament champion, last year becoming the first volleyball team in conference history to go 18-0 in league play. The Bluejays have won 28 straight contests against league competition and will return three All-Americans among five starters and 11 letterwinners.
