PULA, Croatia -- Both Jaali Winters and Jaclyn Taylor have helped their teams into the quarterfinals of the European Global Challenge in Pula, Croatia, after wins on Wednesday.
Rising junior Jaali Winters is participating in the event with the U.S. Women's Collegiate National Team-Europe, while redshirt freshman Jaclyn Taylor is on BIP Midwest. Both are in the U23 division.
Winters and Taylor found themselves on opposite sides of the net on Wednesday morning at 3:00 AM Central (10:00 AM in Croatia). Winters' CNT-Europe club won the match, 25-22, 25-14, 19-25, though both Bluejays excelled.
Winters had eight kills in 17 swings, adding one block and one ace to account for 10 points in the victory. Taylor collected two kills and a team-high three aces despite barely playing in the lopsided second set. Through three matches in Croatia, Winters leads her team with 23 kills and is tied for the team lead with 29 points.
The 2-1 win by CNT-Europe gave the college All-Star team the No. 1 seed in the US Division, and a bye into the quarterfinals. With the afternoon off, the team spent time cliff jumping and exploring caves near the beach of the Adriatic Sea.
The loss by BIP Midwest dropped it to the No. 3 seed in the US Division, and a match into Wednesday afternoon's play-in round match against Czech U23. BIP Midwest cruised to a 25-11, 25-20, 25-18 triumph, though full stats were not available. The victory advances BIP Midwest into a game against the No. 2 seed in the Europe Division and a match against Thursday Czech U18. The Czech's have won 7-of-9 sets and earned a bye into Thursday's quarterfinal.
Both Taylor and Winters' next contests will take place at 3:30 am Central (10:30 am in Croatia) on Thursday, and will be video webcast live at http://bringitusa.com/gc2017/livestream. Taylor's wears No. 3 and her team will be on Court 1, while Winters will wear No. 6 and be on Court 2. The free video feed is of a singular static camera and does not have graphics, replays or a score visible. Video from the matches is not archived. From here on out, remaining "winners bracket" matches will be a best-of-5 sets.
Regardless of their result at 3:30 am Central on Thursday, the teams will hit the court at 11:30 am Central. Because both Winters and Taylor won early on Thursday morning, they will play against each other on Court 1 at 11:30 am Central, in a match that will be video webcast at http://bringitusa.com/gc2017/livestream.
Play at the event concludes on Friday.
The teams will stop in Venice, Italy, en route to returning to the United States.
Winters was named MVP of the 2016 BIG EAST Championship and is well on her way to becoming the most decorated student-athlete in program history. She's been named First Team All-BIG EAST and AVCA All-American twice each, and last December the Ankeny, Iowa, native was named to the NCAA Tournament's All-Austin Regional squad. Taylor has yet to play in a match that counts for CU after redshirting during her initial season on The Hilltop last fall. The St. Charles, Ill., native showed a glimpse of her potential last fall when she had 35 assists and nine digs in the annual Blue-White Scrimmage, and earlier this spring set the Bluejays to a set victory over Wisconsin.
The mission of the European Global Challenge is to give American players experience playing international teams with FIVB rules. The tournament is designed to match up teams from North America with teams from Europe. Teams stay in the beach front Hotel Pula to encourage a cultural exchange between players and coaches. The hotel is perfectly positioned within walking distance to both the competition arena and the crystal teal water of the Adriatic Sea. The town of Pula Croatia is marked by 3,000 year old Roman ruins including one of the last remaining fully intact Roman Colosseums in the world dating back to 68 AD – which is where the tournament's opening ceremony will take place.Â
Winters and Taylor are two of four Creighton volleyball players to spend time this summer with USA Volleyball or overseas. Libero Brittany Witt ventured to Thailand with USA Volleyball in May, while Taryn Kloth recently returned after participating with USA Volleyball in Minneapolis.
Creighton (29-7 last year) is three-time defending BIG EAST regular-season and tournament champion, last year becoming the first volleyball team in conference history to go 18-0 in league play. The Bluejays have won 28 straight contests against league competition and will return three All-Americans among five starters and 11 letterwinners.
