Recent graduate claimed spot on Second Team with perfect 4.00 GPA
OMAHA, Neb. -- Former Creighton men's tennis athlete Harrison Lang earned a spot on the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America Division I Men's At-Large Second Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced on Thursday.
Â
Lang is first men's tennis player in Creighton program history to receive CoSIDA Academic All-America recognition. He joins Jennie Hartjes (2015) as the second athlete from the Bluejay men's or women's tennis programs -- both under the direction of 20-year head coach Tom Lilly -- to be honored at the Academic All-America level.
Â
The Niwot, Colo., native, wrapped up senior season with 11 singles victories at the top two positions and nine doubles wins at the No. 1 slot while serving as a team captain during the spring of 2017.
Â
In the classroom, Lang finished his undergraduate studies with a perfect 4.00 GPA and received a bachelor's degree in neuroscience with a minor in biology at Creighton University's commencement ceremonies in May.
Â
The 2017 All-BIG EAST performer received the Men's 2016-17 BIG EAST Michael Tranghese Postgraduate Leadership Award earlier this spring, which includes a scholarship towards his medical school expenses at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
Â
He also was the recipient of Creighton's Rev. Carl M. Reinert, S.J., Scholar-Athlete Award as Creighton's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 2016-17.
Â
Lang is a four-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athlete (2014-17), three-time All-BIG EAST Academic Team and ITA All-America Team honoree, and two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District VII Men's At-Large First Team selection (2016, 2017).
Â
During his four-year career on the courts, Lang finished with 97 combined victories including 55 in singles and 42 in doubles. He ranks 11th in program history in combined wins and 10th in singles victories.
Â
Lang is Creighton's lone Academic All-American for the 2016-17 academic year and the first Bluejay student-athlete to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America status since men's soccer players Fabian Herbers and Vincent Keller claimed spots on the CoSIDA Academic All-America teams for Division I Men's Soccer following the 2015 fall season.
Â
Additionally, he is the only BIG EAST representative on the 2017Â CoSIDA Academic All-America Men's At-Large teams.
Â
Lang was one of 16 student-athletes on the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America Division I Men's At-Large Team to earn a perfect 4.00 GPA or higher.
Â
The at-large teams for the Academic All-America program consist of student-athletes from the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo, women's beach volleyball, bowling, crew and field hockey, and men's volleyball and wrestling.
