Softball Falls During Both Games Of Doubleheader Against DePaul

Bluejays record two hits during 10 innings on Saturday
CHICAGO, Ill. --Â The Creighton softball team fell twice during a doubleheader against DePaul on Saturday afternoon at Cacciatore Stadium in Chicago, Ill.

The Blue Demons won the opening game 8-0, and claimed a 13-0 victory during the second contest.
Â
Both games ended during the fifth inning because of the eight-run rule.
The Bluejays are now 8-12 in BIG EAST play and 18-31 overall, while DePaul is 11-7 in league action and 26-21 overall.Â

Starting pitching stole the show to open the day on Saturday as Creighton's Bryana Clark and DePaul's Kennedy Garcia each did not allow a hit during the first three innings.

Clark opened the game with three strikeouts and a walk during the bottom of the first.

The junior right-hander retired the next eight Blue Demon batters before Nicole Pihl broke up the no-hitter and shutout with one swing. Pihl, the BIG EAST's leading home run hitter, launched her 14th long ball of the season over the right-center field wall to make it 1-0 in favor of DePaul during the top of the fourth inning.

A walk and double pushed the Blue Demons' lead to 2-0 after four frames.

Anna O'Gorman led off the top of the fifth with a single to right field for Creighton's first hit of the game.

Pinch-runner Kristin Fry advanced to third base on consecutive ground outs but did not score as a strikeout ended the inning.

The Blue Demons drew a one-out walk and hit a double to center to make it 3-0 and end Clark's start during the home half of the fifth.

Three singles, three walks and a fielder's choice produced four more DePaul runs to end the game at 8-0 with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Blue Demons carried its late-game momentum from the opening contest into the second game of the doubleheader by scoring one run in the first, six in the second and six in the third.

Solo home runs produced the first two runs before DePaul scored five more runs on two hits and an error during the second to make it 7-0.

The Blue Demons plated six more in the third with three extra-base hits.

Ashley Cantu's infield-single in the top of the third inning ended as Creighton's only hit during the second game. The Bluejays also walked four times and put two runners in scoring position.

The two losses combined with Providence's victory over Villanova eliminated Creighton from postseason contention. The Bluejays will conclude their season on Sunday against DePaul at 11 a.m. Sunday's contest will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network, which can be found at FOXSportsGo.com and on the FOX Sports Go app.
