OMAHA, Neb. -- The NCAA has recognized six Creighton teams for its Academic Progress Rate during the 2015-16 academic year.
Creighton's men's cross country, men's tennis, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's golf and women's tennis teams earned the APR Public Recognition Award in the NCAA's latest rankings released Wednesday. To qualify, teams must rank in the top 10 percent nationally in the APR of their sport.
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams and provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. Â The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance. Â
This is the sixth straight honor (and eighth overall) for women's tennis. The women's basketball and men's tennis teams have both been honored four straight years, while the men's cross country and women's cross country squads were recognized for a second consecutive year. It's the eighth all-time recognition for women's cross country and third for men's cross country. The women's golf team was honored for the fifth time, but first occasion since 2011.
"NCAA student - athletes and schools continue to achieve unprecedented levels of academic success," said Mark Emmert, NCAA president. "We commend these programs for their commitment to academic excellence and dedication to preparing student - athletes for life after college."
Each year, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team through the annual scorecard of academic achievement, known as APR. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years.
A perfect score (or graduation rate) is represented by 1,000, while a 925 (50 percent rate) marks the threshold for which the NCAA can impose sanctions on athletic programs.
Multiyear APRs for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced May 10th.  That announcement also will include APP penalties for low-performing teams, teams subject to postseason ineligibility and head coach APRs. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
Creighton's student-athletes own a 3.39 cumulative GPA after a earning a 3.43 GPA during the fall 2016 semester, both department records.
