OKATIE, S.C. -- The Creighton men's golf team earned its best finish at a league championship since 2012, tying for sixth place at the 2017 BIG EAST Men's Golf Championships, presented by Jeep, on Tuesday at Callawassie Island in Okatie, S.C.
The Bluejays started the day in eighth place but moved up in the standings with a quick start, reaching as high as fifth place at one point, to close with a final-round 306. That was the program's best round at the BIG EAST Championships since a round of 305 in 2015.
Charlie Bolton led CU on Tuesday with a round of 73 that included four birdies. Buoyed by rounds of 78 and 75 to start the event, Bolton finished in 10th place out of 45 golfers to secure the first top-10 finish at a league championship since Kevin Stanek tied for third place at the 2012 Missouri Valley Conference Championships. It was also the first top-10 finish of Bolton's Bluejay career in a meet featuring three or more teams.
A pair of Bluejays tied for 26th place with a 237 total. Kade Brown opened with an 81 and improved with rounds of 79 and 77, while Koy Potthoff shook off an opening-round 85 to finish with circuits of 77 and 75.
Trey Petitt led CU with a 75 before following that up with loops of 84 and 82 to tie for 34th place with a 241 aggregate.
Andrew Holloway filled out the Bluejay contingent with rounds of 82, 81 and 81 (244 total), tying for 39th place.
Marquette won the meet by one shot with an 899 total, as Matt Bachmann tapped in a short putt on the final hole to secure a one-shot win in the team race over Seton Hall, and a two-shot win for individual medalist honors. The Golden Eagles won their third title in program history despite trailing DePaul by 17 shots heading into the final round. But MU shot a 2-under 286 total, and second-round leader DePaul slipped to fourth after a 312 total.
Bolton led Creighton on the year with a 76.7 scoring average, just ahead of Brown (77.0), Potthoff (77.3) and Petitt (77.5).
The meet was the final contest of the spring season for Creighton, which returns 9-of-11 golfers in the fall. The meet was the final competition for Bluejay seniors Brown and Holloway. Brown finished with a career scoring average of 76.02, the best by any Bluejay since 2008.
