Creighton vs. Butler Series
Bluejays lead, 8-1
Creighton and Butler have met nine times, all as BIG EAST foes. The Bluejays are 8-1 against the Bulldogs, but their lone loss came in Indianapolis in 2015. Five of the nine games between the two squads have been one-run games, with Creighton holding a 4-1 edge in those contests.
BIG EAST Title Within Reach
Heading into the final week of the regular season the Bluejays have already reached the first goal of the 2017 season, qualify for the BIG EAST Baseball Championship. The next goal for Creighton is within reach as the Bluejays enter their series at Butler in first place, by percentage points, in the conference at 10-3 (.769). St. John's is nipping at Creighton's heels as the Red Storm entering a weekend series with Villnova at 11-4 (.733). To claim the regular season crown, the Bluejays need to sweep Butler in Indianapolis. Creighton can also claim the title if it wins at least one game and has the same record over the weekend as St. John's. To take a look at the complete BIG EAST Standings, go to page 10.
Scouting Butler (30-19, 6-9 BIG EAST)
Under first year head coach Dave Schrage, the Bulldogs have been an improved team. Butler holds a slim chance to earn a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament if they win at least two from Creighton this weekend and Xavier is swept by Georgetown. At 30-19, the Bulldogs are guaranteed to finish the season with a winning record for the first time since 2003, that season the Bulldogs were 34-27.
Butler enters the final regular season series hitting .257 as a team, led by Michael Hartnagel (.337), Jordan Lucio (.319) and Gehrig Parker (.296). The most dangerous hitter for the Bulldogs, however, is Tyler Houston. In BIG EAST play Houston is hitting .383, with five home runs and 13 RBI. For the season he leads Butler with 25 extra base hits (13 doubles, 1 triple and 11 home runs) as well as 35 RBI.
On the mound the Bulldogs have been without ace Jeff Schank for the last two weeks and he is not expected to pitch against Creighton. As a team the Bulldogs have a 3.78 ERA, but without Schank that number rises to 5.19.
Clark Brinkman Looking Like Alter Ego of Clark Kent
Sophomore Clark Brinkman certainly appeared able to fly in center field against McNeese State on Saturday, May 13. The Illinois native made diving catches in the second and third innings that each appeared on Sportscenter that evening. In the second Brinkman raced toward right-center for a diving catch, while in the third he laid out for a catch in left-center.
