Bluejays Celebrate Military and First Responders Against Cowboys
Omaha, Neb. -- Playing in front of better than 8,000 fans, the Creighton Baseball team displayed the grit and toughness demanded as the program celebrated Military and First Responders on Saturday, May 13. The Bluejays, however, came up a little short in a 5-3 loss to McNeese State to fall to 22-21 on the season. The Cowboys, meanwhile, moved to 33-16 overall.
The Cowboys got off to a fast start with a two run home run off the bat of Mitchell Rogers in the second and three more runs in the fourth. McNeese State strung together four doubles in the fourth to extend its lead to 5-0.
With two down in the Bluejay half of the fourth, Creighton began to rally with back-to-back singles from freshmen Jason Allbery and Parker Upton. Senior Bryce Only continued the hit parade with an RBI single to right, then senior Riley Landuyt made it 5-2 as he legged on an infield single on a ball bounced up the middle.
Upton got things started for Creighton once more in the sixth, reaching first after getting hit by a pitch with one down. After advancing to second on a ground out, the Grand Island native raced home on Landuyt second straight single up the middle to get the Bluejays within two at 5-3.
That, however, was as close as Creighton could claw as McNeese State closer Trent Fontenot retired the final five Bluejay hitters to notch his fifth save of the season.
McNeese State starter Rhett Deaton moved to 8-2 with the win, allowing two runs on four hits in five innings.
Creighton's Jeff Albrecht took the loss (5-4), allowing five runs on seven hits in six innings of work.
Creighton and McNeese State will wrap up their three-game set on Sunday, May 14th at 12:00 pm. Prior to the game the Bluejays will honor nine seniors for their dedication to the program.
