Bluejays hosted their second BIG EAST match in program history
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's tennis team fell 6-1 to Marquette on Saturday afternoon at the Koch Family Tennis Center during the Bluejays' final home match of the 2017 schedule.
Creighton is now 11-8 with two regular-season duals remaining.
Seniors Katherine Nelsen and Hylan Miller each played their final home match as a member of the Creighton women's tennis program on Saturday. Nelsen owns 100 career victories during four seasons at Creighton, which ranks 13th in program history. Miller has 20 wins during the 2017 spring season as Bluejay, and accumulated 36 wins over three seasons at Nebraska Omaha.
The match marked Creighton's second home match against a BIG EAST opponent since joining the conference before the 2014 spring season. The Bluejays also hosted St. John's on Feb. 26, 2015.
Marquette clinched the top two doubles positions to take the doubles point.
Miller and Claire Embree paired up for a 6-1 win at No. 3 singles for Creighton's lone doubles victory. The Miller and Embree duo now has 10 victories during the spring season.
The Golden Eagles claimed straight-sets victories at four of the six singles positions to seal the overall dual.
Both the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches each needed three sets to be decided.
At the top spot, Creighton's Ashley Ishimura won 6-1 in the opening frame before falling to Marquette's top competitor 6-1, 6-2.
Michaela Henne picked up her 13th consecutive singles victory with a three-set win at No. 2. The Bluejay sophomore started the match with a 6-1 victory before falling 7-5 in the second. Henne responded from the close second frame loss with a 6-2 win in the deciding set.
"Michaela is on a serious streak right now," head coach Tom Lilly said. "She is so mentally strong, and that has been a big part of her success."
Henne is 16-3 overall in singles action.
Both of Creighton's seniors (Nelsen and Miller) went to a tiebreaker in the second set of their respective singles match before falling.
"Today was a little tough with the wind, and because both teams have not had as much practice and play outdoors, but we played pretty well," Lilly said. "I thought we competed at each position and had chances to win but came up a little short."
The Bluejays return to the courts on Tuesday, April 11. Creighton will face UMKC beginning at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
