Bluejays look to avoid a sweep on Sunday
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Creighton softball team fell twice to Providence on Saturday during a doubleheader at Glay Field in Providence, R.I.
The Frairs claimed a 2-1 victory in game one before run-ruling the Bluejays 11-3 in five innings during game two.
Creighton dropped to 8-9 in BIG EAST play and 18-28 overall, while Providence improved to 7-10 in league action and 19-23 overall.
After winning their past four one-run BIG EAST contests, the Bluejays lost by a single run during the first game of Saturday's double-dip.
Providence and Creighton combined to leave six runners on base during the first two innings.
A base-loaded walk in the bottom of the third gave the Friars a 1-0 edge.
Creighton tied the game in the next half inning. Anna O'Gorman doubled inside the right-field line to extend her hitting streak to 10 games to lead-off the top of the fourth, and Allie Reinhart sacrificed pinch-runner Kristin Fry to third base. The next Bluejay hitter, Jayci McGill, hit a slow roller to first, allowing Fry to score and knot the game at 1-1.
Neither team broke the tie during the fourth, but Nicole Lundstrom's team-leading ninth home run gave Providence a 2-1 lead in the fifth.
Creighton had a chance to tie the game or take the lead with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the sixth. Reinhart reached on an error, McGill hit an infield-single and Jen Daro was hit by a pitch. The Friars escaped the inning without allowing a run as pinch-hitter Sam Crowley grounded out to the first baseman for the third out.
Providence also left the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth.
The Bluejays sent their top of the order to the plate in the final frame, but the Friars needed only 10 pitches to retire the side in order.
McGill led the Creighton offense with her first multi-hit game in a Creighton uniform, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Bluejays' Bryana Clark pitched her ninth complete game and allowed four hits, walked four batters and recorded four strikeouts during the loss.
Providence jumped out to an early lead and never looked back during its eight-run five-inning victory. The Friars took a 5-0 edge with single runs in the first and second innings and three in the fourth.
Creighton cut the deficit to just two runs with three consecutive RBI singles in the top of the fifth.
Jessica Lewis walked and Aujanae McCoy reached on a fielder's choice to open the inning. Tash Coffiel bunted Lewis and McCoy to second and third base for the middle of the Creighton order.
Sam Dellinger drove in the first Bluejay run with single through the left side to plate Lewis. O'Gorman lifted a 1-1 delivery into shallow left field as McCoy crossed home to make it 5-2. Reinhart sent the first pitch she saw into left field to drive in the third Creighton run.
A fielder's choice and strikeout ended the frame, but not before the Bluejays trimmed the deficit to two runs.
Providence responded in the bottom of the fifth by scoring six runs on four hits to end the game.
A single and home run led off the home half of the frame to make it 7-3, before three walks and a single drove in the eighth Friar run.
A fielder's choice plated run number nine and a two-RBI single ended the game at 11-3.
O'Gorman extended her hitting streak to 11 games with one hit in each contest on Saturday, while McGill's lifted her hit-streak to six games by going a combined 3-for-5 with an RBI and sacrifice over the course of both games.
Creighton and Providence will conclude their three-game series on Sunday at 10 a.m. Central. Sunday's game will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network, which can be found at FOXSportsGo.com and on the FOX Sports Go app.
