Bluejays wrap up 2017 season with back draw match on Saturday
CAYCE, S.C. -- The Creighton women's tennis team fell 4-1 to top-seeded St. John's in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Championships on Friday in Cayce, S.C.
The Bluejays are now 13-10 and will wrap up the 2017 season with a back draw match on Saturday afternoon.
Creighton opened Friday's quarterfinal match against the Red Storm by earning the doubles point.
St. John's won 6-1 at the top doubles position before the Bluejays claimed victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots. Hylan Miller and Claire Embree paired up for their team-leading 13th doubles victory with a 6-3 decision at No. 3. Katherine Nelsen and Michaela Henne earned a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles to give Creighton the first point.
The Red Storm started singles action with 6-2, 6-0 wins at the top two positions.
Nelsen won seven games during the No. 3 singles match before falling 6-4, 6-3.
St. John's closed the dual with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles.
"We had a lot of energy and played some of the best doubles of the year at two and three -- those were good wins," head coach Tom Lilly said. "We also came out competing in singles and won some early games, but St. John's is very talented and proved to be too good.
"I was pleased with our effort and play for the majority of the match."
Embree split sets during the No. 6 singles match and Darby Rosette fell 7-6 in the opening set at No. 4 singles before both matches went unfinished.
Both teams had to battle each other and playing conditions that featured a heat index hovering around 95 degrees.
Creighton will play in a back draw match at 3 p.m. Central on Saturday afternoon against an opponent that is still to be determined.
