Bluejays will compete in the backdraw on Saturday afternoon
CAYCE, S.C. -- The Creighton men's tennis team fell 4-0 to top-seeded DePaul during the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Championships on Friday morning at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center in Cayce, S.C.
Eighth-seeded Creighton is now 9-11 overall and will compete in the backdraw tomorrow afternoon.
DePaul opened the match by earning the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Creighton's Armando Gandini and Aaron Chalstrom battled DePaul's No. 2 pair in a close match before falling 7-5.
The Blue Demons claimed three straight-sets singles victories to seal the overall dual.
DePaul won 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 3 slot before Nathan de Veer claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win during the No. 1 singles match.
A 6-2, 6-4 Blue Demons' victory at the No. 6 position ended the match.
"We had some opportunities in the doubles being up at No. 1 and No. 2 and playing well, but DePaul stepped up and made good adjustments to finish the point," head coach Tom Lilly said. "We competed in singles and lost plenty of deuce points, and DePaul was the better team today."
Creighton's Alex Koca and Chalstrom each won first set matches at No. 4 and 5, respectively, but the overall match ended before the conclusion of either individual match.
The Bluejays' opponent and match time for Saturday will be determined following the conclusion of the other three men's quarterfinals on Friday afternoon.
