Creighton vs. Xavier Series
Bluejays lead, 9-6
The Musketeers have been a thorn in the Bluejays foot throughout Creighton's tenure in the BIG EAST. Creighton holds a 9-6 edge overall and a 7-6 lead since the two teams became conference rivals at the onset of the 2014 season. Creighton is 3-0 against the Musketeers in TD Ameritrade Park Omaha, sweeping the series in 2015. Xavier, however, are the only BIG EAST squad to hold a series win over Creighton. The Musketeers took two of three from the Bluejays last year in Ohio. Xavier has also had the Bluejays number in the postseason, taking the 2014 BIG EAST Tournament Championship Game as well as the 2016 Championship from Creighton.
Scouting Xavier (24-18, 6-3 BIG EAST)
The Musketeers represent the final BIG EAST home series of the season for the Bluejays and Xavier has won its last four BIG EAST games. After
dropping the first two conference contests to Villanova, the Musketeers have won six of their last seven BIG EAST games.
Xavier's starting trio has been the strength of its team. During BIG EAST play Zac Lowther, Garrett Schilling and Greg Jacknewitz have a combined ERA of 1.58, allowing nine earned runs in 51.1 innings over nine games.
The Musketeers have also been strong at the dish, hitting .261 as a team. Rylan Bannon leads Xavier with a .322 average and a conference leading 12 home runs. Another force at the plate for the Musketeers is Joe Gellenbeck and his team-high 45 RBI.
If Xavier has a weakness it has been its bullpen, the Musketeers have a team ERA of 4.44 this season. The closer role has been in flux, but Xavier seems to have settled on Matt Kent (4-1, 1.47 ERA and two saves).
Last Time Out: Creighton 4, Wichita State 3 (10)
Senior Bryce Only's single in the bottom of the 10th inning helped the Creighton baseball team to its nation-leading 11th straight win as the
Bluejays topped Wichita State 4-3 in 10 innings on Wednesday, April 26th.
Only's heroics came after he fell behind 0-2 in the count with the bases loaded and no out. Facing a drawn-in infield, Only chopped a ball that deflected off the glove of third baseman Alec Bohm as sophomore Michael Emodi scored from third without a throw. Emodi opened the inning with a double, and after an intentional walk to pinch-hitter Nicholas Ortega, both men moved up 90 feet when freshman Will Robertson was walked on four pitches to bring up Only.
Only Delivers Bluejays' Seventh Final At-Bat Win, Including Four Walk-Off
Senior Bryce Only's infield single to short marked the seventh time in 2017 that Creighton has posted a win in its final at-bat, including four walk-off wins. Conversely the Bluejays have watched their opponents earn five final at-bat victories, three by walk-off.
