Bluejays win first round match at BIG EAST Championships for second consecutive season
CAYCE, S.C. -- The Creighton women's tennis team claimed a 4-1 victory over Butler during the first round of the BIG EAST Championships on Thursday morning at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center in Cayce, S.C.
The eighth-seeded Bluejays improved to 13-9 and will matchup against top-seeded St. John's on Friday morning at 11:30 a.m. Central in the quarterfinal round.
The Bluejays earned the doubles point by winning the No. 2 and 3 doubles matches over the Bulldogs. Michaela Henne and Katherine Nelsen paired up for a 6-3 win at the No. 2 slot, and the pair of Hylan Miller and Claire Embree picked up its team-leading 12th doubles victory with a 6-4 win at the No. 3 position.
Ashley Ishimura claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win during the No. 1 singles match to give Creighton a 2-0 lead in the overall match.
Darby Rosette extended the Bluejays lead to three points with her straight-sets (6-0, 6-3) win at No. 4 singles.
Butler picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles to make it 3-1 in favor of Creighton.
Hylan Miller's victory at the No. 5 slot helped the Bluejays advance to the quarterfinals. The senior dropped only two games (6-2, 6-0) as Creighton sealed its second consecutive first round win at the BIG EAST Championships. The Jays swept Providence to open the 2016 event in Cayce, S.C.
"We played solid doubles to start the match and won the big points today, which something we have struggled with lately," head coach Tom Lilly said. "In singles we played confident and fought through any adversity on each court.
"We will need to play very well against the top team in our conference tomorrow, but we certainly have the talent to keep things close, and we'll see what happens."
In the No. 2 singles match, Henne won her first set 6-4 and played to a 4-4 deadlock in the second frame before the overall match ended.
Nelsen fell in the opening frame 6-3 during the No. 3 singles match but evened it with a 6-2 second-set win. The deciding frame just started as the Bluejays won the dual.
The No. 1 doubles match also went unfinished as Ishimura and Rosette battled Butler's top doubles pair to a 6-6 tie.
A victory over the Red Storm on Friday morning would advance Creighton to the semifinals on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. A loss would place the Bluejays in a consolation match on Saturday afternoon.
