Bluejays batter Villanova bullpen with nine runs in final two at-bats
OMAHA, Neb. --Â The Creighton Baseball used a six-run seventh inning to pick up its ninth straight win, an 11-2 victory over visiting Villanova on Saturday, April 22nd.
The win allowed Creighton (17-16, 7-1 BIG EAST) to move above the .500 mark for the first time this season and ensured the Bluejays their third straight series victory to open league play. Villanova dropped to 8-22 with the loss, and 2-3 in conference action.
Creighton's six-run outburst came on just two hits in a half-inning that lasted nearly 35 minutes. Bryce Only walked to start the frame and end the night of Preseason BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year Hunter Schryver. New hurler Ryan Pfutzenreute came on and picked up a strikeout, but Only would steal second and score on a single up the middle by Jason Allbery. Clark Brinkman then singled, and 'Nova went back to the bullpen for Jason Applegate. A wild pitch scored Allbery from third, and Applegate then walked Isaac Collins before plunking Thomas Luevano and Michael Emodi consecutively to force in two more runs. Mike Sgarmella was then summoned, and he beaned Will Robertson to force in another Bluejay runner. A walk to Riley Landuyt followed to plate Luevano and end Sgarmella's evening. Jake Esp came on and escaped the jam, but not before Only's sacrifice fly brought home Emodi to make it 8-2.
Creighton added three insurance runs in the eighth against two more Wildcat relievers. One run scored on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to Emodi, another on a wild pitch, and the final run on an inning-ending double play.
Villanova took a 2-0 lead on single runs in the fifth and sixth innings in what was a pitcher's duel for the much of the night. In the fifth, David Gulati tripled with two outs and scored when Jeff Albrecht's next offering was in the dirt. In the sixth inning, Todd Czinege singled, went to second on a bunt, to third on another wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat from JP Radvany.
Creighton evened the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Collins singled with one out, then raced to third when Luevano's dribbler to third base was thrown wide for the two-base error. Emodi then brought home Collins when his blooper fell between three Wildcats down the right-field line, and Luevano scored on a wild pitch.
Albrecht threw a career-high 109 pitches in six innings of work. The senior southpaw yielded five hits, two runs and three walks while tying a career-high with seven strikeouts, but did not factor into the decision.
Schryver (3-5) lived up to the hype before being pulled, limiting CU to four hits, two runs (one earned) and three walks while striking out nine men in six innings.
Ethan DeCaster (2-1) picked up his second win in as many nights with two scoreless innings of relief, while John Sakowski added a scoreless ninth. Collins went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Luevano also scored three times despite not getting a hit.
Villanova used seven pitchers in the game, with none of its six relievers recording more than two outs. Gulati and Czinege both went 3-for-5 to account for six of Nova's 10 hits.
The Bluejays and Wildcats will close out the series on Sunday when Creighton's Keith Rogalla (2-2, 3.86 ERA) takes on Villanova's Ryan Doty (1-5, 5.97 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. Central.
