Creighton vs. Villanova Series: Bluejays lead, 9-1
The Bluejays and Wildcats have faced off 10 times, including nine as foes in the BIG EAST. Creighton owns a 9-1, taking all three meetings in Omaha during the 2015 season. Villanova won the first meeting as conference foes in 2014, but the Bluejays have won the last eight straight between the two squads.
Scouting Villanova (8-20, 2-1 BIG EAST)
If you simply glance at the overall record for Villanova, you may make the mistake of thinking its a team lacking talent. At 8-20 overall, that mistake is understandable. The Wildcats, however, bring the BIG EAST's Preseason Pitcher of the Year to Omaha this weekend as he isn't the Friday night starter.
Under first year head coach Kevin Mulvey Villanova stumbled at the start of the season to a 2-11 record (March 11). The Wildcats managed to play just one game over the next 18-days as rain washed away or postponed seven contests. (Consider that the Bluejays opened the 2017 season 1-11, then watched four straight games washed out by rain).
Once Villanova returned to the diamond on March 29 the Wildcats earned their third victory. As the month of April began, Villanova took a game from Rutgers on April 5, then claimed the first series of BIG EAST play in dramatic fashion against Xavier.
The opener saw Musketeer starter Zac Lowther take a perfect game to the ninth, only to see Villanova plate three runs to claim the game 3-2. The Preseason Pitcher of the Year Hunter Schryver tossed six scoreless in the second battle with Xavier to guide Villanova to a 1-0 win, claiming the
series from the defending BIG EAST Champs.
On the season the Wildcats' strength has been their starting rotation. Schryver has moved to the Saturday spot while sophomore Jonathan
Rosero has taken over as the Friday option. Ryan Doty has held down the Sunday starting spot. That trio have a combined 3.67 ERA in 110.1 innings. The staff as a whole, however, post a 5.80 ERA in 242 innings.
At the plate the Wildcats have struggled, hitting .227 as a team. The bright spot for Villanova's offense has been Todd Czinege's .324 average and team-high 17 RBI. The next highest average is Donovan May's .271, while JP Radvany is second on the team with 10 RBI.
Stroschein Shines Against Nebraska
Sent to the bump to get the Bluejays into their intrastate rivalry game against Nebraska on Tuesday, head coach Ed Servais was hoping to get six or seven outs from senior Austin Stroschein. The Iowa native more than doubled his coach's hopes, allowing two runs in 5+ innings. Stroschein went on to even the series with the Huskers as the Bluejays grabbed a 5-2 win.
Streaking Bluejays
A trio of Bluejays enter the weekend series with Villanova with notable streaks as freshman Parker Upton has a team-high eight-game hitting streak, while sophomore Michael Emodi has reached base in 19 consecutive contests. Freshman Isaac Collins also has a double-digit streak of reaching base at 10 games.
