Creighton vs. Georgetown Series
Bluejays lead Hoyas, 10-2
Creighton leads the series with Georgetown 10-2, including taking seven of the nine meetings since the two squads became BIG EAST foes. This will be the Bluejays second trip to Shirley Povich Field (Georgetown's home park). Creighton took two of three from the Hoyas in 2015, taking the final two games of the series. Last season Creighton took the first two meetings, but the Hoyas battled back to take the series finale on May 8.
Scouting Georgetown (20-12, 0-0 BIG EAST)
Georgetown opens BIG EAST play this weekend, riding a six-game winning streak. The Hoyas are looking to return to the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since 2015, which was also the last time it was held at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.
The Hoyas enter the weekend hitting .301 as a team, led by Michael Derenzi (.388) and Jake Kuzbel (.373). One of Georgetown's biggest weapons is its team speed. The Hoyas are 35-of-52 on the base paths in 32 contests. Derenzi leads his squad, swiping 10-of-13 bags this season.
On the mound the Hoyas have a team ERA of 4.33, the trio of starters that Creighton will face bring experience. Mathews, Cushing and Superko each faced the Bluejays in the last two seasons. The backside of the Hoyas' bullpen is a question, but not necessarily a weakness. Three differenthurlers have at least three saves this season, led by six from Jimmy Swad.
Deja Vu - Bluejays Rally for 6-5 Win Over
South Dakota State in 11 innings
Down 5-4 heading to the bottom of the ninth, Creighton became the first team this season to touch Jackrabbit closer Chris Halbur for a run during the 2017 season. With two down and no base runners the Bluejays got a single from senior Riley Landuyt, then pinch runner Ben Reznicek moved to second and tied the game via an RBI single from freshman Will Robertson. Two frames later the Bluejays claimed the 6-5 win on an RBI single by senior Bryce Only.
The ironic fact is Creighton scored a run in the eighth to tie South Dakota State (4-4) on April 13, 2016. The Jackrabbits took the lead with a run in the 11th, but the Bluejays countered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
