Seven-year Creighton assistant will work for the reigning Big Ten champion
OMAHA, Neb. -- Steve Lutz, an assistant men's basketball coach at Creighton the past seven years, is leaving that role to accept a similar position at Purdue.
Lutz was one of Greg McDermott's first hires after the latter was named head coach of the Bluejays in the spring of 2010, and has helped the Bluejays compile a record of 166-82 in the past seven seasons. The Bluejays made four NCAA Tournaments, one NIT and one CBI in that time, earning nine postseason victories in those seasons. Creighton won a Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title in 2012-13, and MVC Tournament titles in 2012 and 2013. The Bluejays joined the BIG EAST four seasons ago and have since appeared in the BIG EAST Tournament title championship game in both 2014 and 2017.
"First and foremost, I want to say that the last seven years for my wife, my family and myself have been some of the best years of my 22 years in college coaching," said Lutz. "We had a great time here and we have made many lifelong friends here that we will never forget. But, we are excited about the new opportunity to work at a school like Purdue with a head coach like Matt Painter who is very similar to Greg McDermott in terms of being a great human being and basketball coach."
Purdue went 27-8 in the recently-completed 2016-17 season, reaching the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament while winning the Big Ten regular-season title. The Boilermakers are coached by Matt Painter.
McDermott was quick to acknowledge the contributions that Lutz made to Creighton while wishing him luck at Purdue.
"Steve's been an integral part of our program's success in the last seven years, and we thank him for his work within our program both on and off the court," said McDermott. "We wish him and his family all the best as they move on to Purdue."Â
Creighton went 25-10 in 2016-17. The Bluejays tied for third place in the BIG EAST Conference, played in the BIG EAST Tournament final at Madison Square Garden, and reached the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in the last six seasons.
