Tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles determines final outcome
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Creighton women's tennis team fell 4-3 to UMKC on Tuesday afternoon at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, Mo.
The Bluejays are now 11-9 during dual action with one regular-season match remaining.
UMKC clinched the doubles point with victories at the top two doubles spots. The Kangaroos won 7-5 at No. 1 and needed a tiebreaker to claim the No. 2 slot. Host UMKC edged out Creighton's No. 2 doubles team 7-4 in the tiebreaker.
Three of five singles matches went three sets, with two of those three-set matches going in favor of the Bluejays.
Hylan Miller dropped her opening set at No. 5 before tying the match with a 6-2 win during the second frame. Miller controlled the deciding set and cruised to a 6-1 win.
Sophomore Michaela Henne continued her impressive winning streak with a three-sets victory at No. 2. After falling 7-6 in the first frame, Henne tied the match with a 6-1 second-set victory. The Kansas City native sealed her 14th consecutive victory and moved to 17-3 overall, including 7-0 at the No. 2 position, with a 7-6 victory in the final set.
Ashley Ishimura opened the No. 1 singles match with a 6-3 win before falling 7-5, 7-5 in the final two sets.
UMKC claimed straight-sets victories at the No. 3 and 4 positions, while Creighton claimed a point at the No. 6 position with a default.
"UMKC is a strong team even with some injuries, and they played well when they needed to," head coach Tom Lilly said. "We let emotions get to us in doubles and we were not able to have confidence with our games when things got close.
"We did much better at most positions in singles and had some great three-set wins from Michaela and Hylan."
Creighton concludes its 2017 regular season with a match at the Koch Family Tennis Center against Nebraska Omaha on Saturday, April 22 at 1 p.m.
