Creighton wins one doubles and one singles match
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Creighton men's tennis team fell 6-1 to Butler on Wednesday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
The Bluejays fell to 4-8, while the Bulldogs improved to 10-3.
Creighton's lone point came at the No. 4 singles slot from a three-set win by Brooks Kendall. Kendall fell 6-2 in the first set before rallying for scores of 6-4 and 6-3 in the final two frames.
Armando Gandini and Aaron Chalstrom picked up a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles, but Butler claimed the doubles point with victories at the top two spots.
The Bulldogs controlled singles play by taking four of the six matches in straight sets.
Kendall's win at No. 4 and Aviv Ben Shabat's victory at No. 2 were the two matches that went a full three frames.
Ben Shabat earned a 6-2 first set win before Gandini evened the match with a 6-4 victory in the second. In the deciding set, Ben Shabat clinched the point with a 6-2 win.
"Our guys fought hard and had some chances to earn a few more team points but just were not able to capitalize," head coach Tom Lilly said. "We got in position to serve for the doubles point but didn't hold.
"Butler is a very good team and they have beaten some quality opponents already, and today they were better. We will regroup tonight and try to end break on a positive note."
Creighton plays its final match during Spring Break in Florida on Thursday morning against Marian University. The match is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. at the Lake Cane Tennis Center.
