Creighton falls to Grand Canyon, defeats Maine
PHOENIX -- The Creighton softball team collected only two hits during its first game at the GCU Round Robin before tallying 11 base hits in the nightcap, as the Bluejays split a pair of games against Grand Canyon and Maine on Saturday in Phoenix, Ariz.
Â
Creighton fell 2-1 to Grand Canyon before defeating Maine 5-2.
Â
The Bluejays are now 5-11 during 2017.
Â
During the second game of the day, Creighton scored five runs on seven hits during the top of the second inning to build a large enough cushion to defeat the Black Bears.
Â
Mikaela Pechar opened the scoring with a two-RBI single to drive in Jen Daro and Sam Dellinger.
Â
The RBI-single was Pechar's first hit of her Creighton career.
Â
Following a single and fielder's choice from Tash Coffiel and Ashley Cantu, Anna O'Gorman drove in two more runs with a single through the right side.
Â
Allie Reinhart pushed the advantage to 5-0 with the seventh Bluejay single of the inning to drive in her team-leading seventh RBI of the season.
Â
Maine scored single runs in the third and fifth innings, and left eight runners on base during Saturday night's contest.Â
Bryana Clark pitched six innings, and picked up her third win of the season, and Dellinger picked up her first save by pitching a scoreless seventh.
Clark allowed seven hits and two earned runs, while Dellinger walked one and faced four hitters in the final frame. Â
Dellinger recorded Creighton's first save since Micaela Whitney saved Creighton's win over Drexel on March 10, 2016 during the Rebel Spring Games.Â
Coffiel, O'Gorman and Jen Daro each finished with two hits a piece against the Black Bears. Creighton's 11 hits -- all singles -- came from eight different players.Â
In the opening game of the day, Creighton scored one run on two hits in the first inning, but did not record a hit during the final six innings as the host Lopes claimed a 2-1 victory.
Â
Coffiel led off the game with a double to right-center field, and Reinhart drove her in with a single to center.
Â
Grand Canyon loaded the bases in the first and third innings with only one out, but Bluejay starter Michal Hylton escaped without allowing a run each time.
Â
In the bottom of the first, the Lopes loaded the bases with two walks and a single. Hylton induced consecutive pop ups to end the threat.
Â
During the home half of the third, three Grand Canyon singles put runners at each base, but Creighton's sophomore left-handed starter recorded two consecutive outs to keep the game 1-0 in favor of the Bluejays.
Â
The Lopes broke into the scoring column with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. After the first two hitters of the inning singled, Dominique Gonzalez doubled to left-center field to drive in two runs and give Grand Canyon the lead.
The Bluejays put one runner on base via walks during the second, third and fourth innings, but did not have a runner advance into scoring position after the opening frame.
Dellinger pitched 2.2 innings of relief, allowed one hit and faced only 10 Grand Canyon hitters.Â
Coffiel finished Saturday 3-for-6 with a double, two runs scored and a walk during two games. The junior shortstop leads the Bluejays with a .286 batting average through 16 games.Â
Creighton continues play at the GCU Round Robin on Sunday with a game against Grand Canyon at 1 p.m. before finishing the event with a contest against Maine at 6 p.m.
