Creighton scored a run in both the sixth and seventh innings to defeat the Hoyas 3-2
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Creighton softball team scored one run in both the sixth and seventh innings and held off a late rally to defeat Georgetown 3-2 on Sunday at Guy Mason Field in Washington, D.C.
The Bluejays took two out of three games against the Hoyas during the opening weekend of BIG EAST play, as Creighton and Georgetown split a doubleheader on Saturday.
The Bluejays are now 11-17 overall and 2-1 in BIG EAST play, while Georgetown is 8-19 and 1-2 in league action.
Trailing 2-1 in the sixth inning, Sam Dellinger doubled to left field to lead-off the frame. Kristin Fry pinch ran for Dellinger and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Anna O'Gorman.Â
Junior Sam Crowley wasted no time to drive in the tying run, laying down a bunt-single to drive in Fry from third base to make it 2-2.Â
Georgetown put one on base during the bottom of the sixth but did not score.
Aujanae McCoy and Ashley Cantu produced back-to-back one-out singles in top of the 7th to put the Bluejays in business. With Tash Coffiel in the batter's box, Cantu and McCoy stole second and third, respectively, to put two runners in scoring position for Creighton.Â
Coffiel singled to third base to load up the bases for Dellinger, Creighton's RBI-leader. Dellinger sent a ground ball to the shortstop who had only one play at third, allowing McCoy to cross home-plate as the go-ahead run.
Georgetown forced a fly out to end the inning, but not before the Jays took a 3-2 lead heading to the last of the seventh.
A walk followed by a double and walk loaded the bases for Georgetown in the bottom of the final frame with only one out. With the bases full of Hoyas, Dellinger induced a pop out to short and fly out to right to hold off Georgetown's late rally and help Creighton win its second BIG EAST game.
Dellinger allowed seven hits and two runs, while walking three and striking out one during her second complete-game performance of the season.
At the plate, Dellinger extended her hitting-streak to nine games with her double during the sixth inning and drove in the game-winning run for her team-leading 17th RBI.
The Hoyas opened Sunday's scoring with a run-producing single during the second inning.
Cantu produced a sacrifice fly to left field to tie the game at 1-1 during the top of the third.Â
Georgetown regained the lead in the fourth with an unearned run before Creighton used its late-inning rally to pull out a victory.Â
Cantu, Coffiel and McCoy each had two hits to lead the Bluejays' offense.
Creighton is back in action for a mid-week game against in-state rival Nebraska on Wednesday. First pitch between the Bluejays and Huskers is scheduled for 6 p.m.Â
