OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's tennis team fell 4-3 to Colorado State on Saturday afternoon at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
The Bluejays are now 11-7 with three matches remaining during the regular season, including two at home.
The No. 3 singles position decided the match. Colorado State's Alyssa Grijaiva won 7-6 (6) in the first frame before Katherine Nelsen evened the match with a 6-4 second-set win. Grijaiva jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the deciding set, but Nelsen fought back with wins in three of the next four games to make it 5-3. In the ninth game, Grijaiva closed out the match with a 6-3 victory.
The Rams took an early advantage by winning the top two doubles positions without dropping a game to take the doubles point.
Creighton took the lead with straight-sets wins at the No. 2, 4 and 1 singles. Michaela Henne started the action with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 2, while Darby Rosette claimed a 6-2, 6-5 win at No. 4. Ashley Ishimura came out on top at No. 1 with a 7-5, 6-4 win.
Henne has now won 12-straight matches and is 15-3, while Rosette owns a seven-match winning streak and is 10-8.
Colorado State tied the action with wins at the bottom two singles positions before Grijaiva helped the Rams clinch the overall dual.
"This was a tough loss because we had our chances and just came up a bit short," head coach Tom Lilly said. "Colorado State is a great program, so there is no shame in losing, but to be in a position to win and not capitalize makes every competitor feel bad. Our depth and doubles have been a strength this year, but we just didn't have it today in the lower lineup, and CSU played great doubles.
"Our girls will respond and compete hard in the next match -- I'm confident in that."
The Bluejays are off next week before resuming competition against BIG EAST foe Marquette on April 8.
