Creighton WBB Advances to NCAA Second Round with 76-49 Win Over Toledo

Corvallis, Ore. -- A 15-point opening quarter from senior Marissa Janning sent the No. 7 seed Creighton women's basketball team to a 76-49 win over No. 10 Toledo in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, March 17.
The win pushed Creighton to 24-7 on the season, while Toledo ended its 2016-17 season at 25-9.
The Bluejays came out firing from the jump as Janning delivered Creighton first four points, followed by a three-pointer from sophomore Audrey Faber to build a 7-0 lead. Creighton edge grew to 21-6 with 3:34 left in the period, thanks to a pair of treys from Janning and senior Lauren Works. The Bluejays held a 27-12 advantage after one period.
Janning was forced to the sideline late in the opening quarter with two fouls, but Faber stepped up her game by getting to the foul line (4-4 in the second quarter), while the team continued to knock down the three-point shot (7-of-10 in the first half) as Creighton led 44-22 at the break.
Toledo opened the second half with six straight points to close within 16 (44-28), but junior Sydney Lamberty ended the Rockets' launch with five of the next seven points. THe Bluejays pushed its lead to its largest margin (28 points) at 63-35 by the end of the third on another three-ball by Lamberty.
The final period saw the two teams both empty their benches as the margin never dipped under 24 points.
Janning closed with a game-high 19 points, while Lamberty finished with 16. Toledo got a team-high 11 points from Mikaela Boyd and 10 from Kaayla McIntyre as well as Mariellla Santucci.
Creighton will face eight-ranked Oregon State in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. A game time has yet to be set for the battle between the host No. 2 seed Beavers and the Bluejays.
