Omaha, Neb. -- After its weekend series with CSU Bakersfield was canceled by inclement weather, the Creighton Baseball team returns to action on Tuesday, March 14 with a road contest at Kansas State. First pitch is set for 4:00 pm.
Kansas State leads the overall series with Creighton, 52-39-1. During the Servais era the Bluejays hold a 10-8 edge on the Wildcats, taking the last two of the last three meetings. The last battle between the two squads was a 5-1 Creighton victory on March 22, 2016.
Scouting Kansas State (12-4)
The Wildcats dropped two of three in a weekend series with UC Riverside. Kansas State is 6-2 at home this season, dropping only the two contests with UC Riverside. The Wildcats are 0-1 against the BIG EAST in 2017, falling to St. John's 9-2 on Feb. 24. The top of the order has provided the thump for Kansas State in the early portion of the season. Leadoff man Cameron Thompson leads the Wildcats with a .389 average, 28 runs scored and seven stolen bases. Cleanup hitter Jake Schudder is just a step behind at .350 on the season with five home runs and 21 RBI.
Bluejays Off By the Slimmest of Margins
After going 13-7 in one-run games last season, the Bluejays are 0-5 in one-run contests in early portion of this season. Four times in the first 11 games, Creighton has rallied to take the lead or tie the game in the final two innings. Each time, however, Creighton's opponent hit last and claimed the game. Those fortunes could change as the Bluejays open their home schedule on Friday. Creighton was 22-4 in the friendly confines of TD Ameritrade Park Omaha last season.
Brinkman Hits for Cycle in Doubleheader at Air Force
While it will not go into the record books as a cycle, sophomore Clark Brinkman collected all the pieces to a cycle in Creighton doubleheader at Air Force on March 8. After weather pushed the series opener on March 7, the Bluejays and Falcons agreed to two seven-inning contests on March 8. During the two games, Brinkman was 5-for-6 (.833) with three extra-base hits and two singles. Brinkman went 3-for-3 in the opener, singling in the second, tripling in the third and launching his first home run as a Bluejay in the fifth. Clark did not come to the plate again in the opener, denying him a shot at the cycle. In the second game he grounded out in his first trip to the dish (second), collected a single in the fifth and doubled in the seventh. Overall Brinkman collected a cycle over two games in five at-bats (3B/HR/GO/1B/2B). The last Bluejay to hit for the cycle was Ryan Fitzgerald on May 14, 2015 against Villanova.
