Janning Delivers Season-High 27 in Win
Indianapolis, Ind. -- Fifth-year senior Marissa Janning wanted nothing more than to bookend her career with conference championships, behind her 27 points the Creighton women's basketball team did just that with a 65-53 win over Butler on Sunday, Feb. 26.
Creighton's victory clinched a share of the BIG EAST regular season title for the Bluejays at 16-2 in conference play (22-6 overall). Butler, meanwhile, finished the regular season at 5-24 and 2-16 in conference play.
Butler opened the game with a burst behind six quick points from Alexa Bailey to grab a 12-5 lead with 3:09 left. The Bluejays responded by taking flight from long range to charge back, led by a trey from Janning. Freshman Jaylyn Agnew followed with another three-ball to make it 14-11 (2:11), while sophomore Audrey Faber sent the game to the second quarter with Creighton trailing by just two via another three-ball, 16-14.
Down 19-18 early in the second, the Bluejays seized control with six straight points on a layup by senior Lauren Works, a free throw by Janning and Agnew's second trifecta of the afternoon (24-19) with 4:19 left. Up 26-23 moments later, another 5-0 burst gave Creighton its largest lead at the time, 31-23 (1:56). Once more it was Janning's motor igniting the Bluejays, starting things off with a traditional three-point play and capping the surge with another layup.
As they've done all season long Creighton put the game away with a strong third period, outscoring the Bulldogs 22-12 in the period. Janning and fellow fifth-year senior Brianna Rollerson were dominant in the period with a combined 20 points (11 by Janning and nine from Rollerson).
Leading 54-38 heading into the fourth, Creighton maintained a double-digit edge throughout the final quarter to seize its first conference championship since the 2012-13 season. That year the Bluejays closed its final season as members of the Missouri Valley Conference as co-champions.
Janning's 27 led all scorers, while Rollerson and Agnew each finished with 12 points. Butler got a team-high 16 points from both Bailey and Tori Schickel.
Creighton enters the BIG EAST Tournament next week as the No. 2 seed, Creighton will face the winner of the No.7 Xavier/No. 10 Butler game on Sunday, March 5 at 12:00 pm (CT).
