Santa Clara, Calif. -- Junior Rollie Lacy was dominate on the bump, limiting Santa Clara to one run in seven innings of work, helping the Bluejay Baseball team earned its first victory of the season (3-1) over Santa Clara on Friday, Feb. 24.
With the win the Bluejays moved to 1-3 on the season, while Santa Clara fell to 1-3.
The Bluejays got the first run of the game in the opening half-inning. Senior Ben Reznicek was hit by a pitch to open the game, then went to second on a single from Isaac Collins. After a passed ball sent the two runners to second and third, freshman Thomas Luevano bounced into a 5-3-5 double play. Reznicek scored easily on the play, but Collins was cut down trying to advance to third. The double play cost Luevano the RBI, but the one-run edge gave Lacy a small amount of wiggle room.
The right-hander from Minnesota was determined to make his 1-0 stick as Lacy worked around a double in the first and third frame as well as errors in the second and fourth. Lacy retired the first two in the fifth, then yielded a full-count walk to Evan Haberle. The next batter, Tyler Meditz, laced a single to left but the Bluejays cut down Haberle trying to advance to third to end the inning.
Lacy posted his first 1-2-3 frame in the sixth, but a solo home run from Santa Clara's John Cresto knotted the game at 1-1, heading to the top of the eighth. The Creighton offense wasted little time picking up their ace as senior Bryce Only ripped a double to left to open the inning, then senior Brennan Hammer drove an RBI single into right-center.
Junior Ethan DeCaster worked a scoreless eighth, working around a two-out double as he struck out the side. Then sophomore Michael Emodi smashed his first home run to left field to give Creighton an insurance run.
Senior David Gerber took the ball in the ninth, earning his first save of the season and 21st of his career. Gerber allowed a leadoff double to open the ninth, then retired the next three batters on a groundout and back-to-back strikeouts.
Lacy earned the win (1-1), allowing one run on five hits and one walk over seven innings. Jacob Steffens (0-1) suffered the loss for Santa Clara, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk in 7.1 innings.
Collins paced the Creighton offense with two of the Bluejays' six hits.
