Women's Tennis Opens Show-Me State Road Trip With Victory over Missouri State, 5-2

Creighton won the doubles point and four of six singles matches
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Creighton women's tennis team picked up a 5-2 victory over Missouri State on Friday afternoon at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo.
The Bluejays improved to 3-4 this season while snapping a three-match losing skid. The Bears fell to 4-5.
Creighton gained an early 1-0 edge with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take the doubles point. Katherine Nelsen and Michaela Henne picked up a 6-1 victory at No. 2 and Claire Embree and Hylan Miller earned a 6-1 win at No. 3.
Missouri State took the advantage in the overall match with victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles before Creighton responded by winning at the other four positions.
Henne won in straight-sets at No. 4, while Miller, Embree, and Nelsen each outlasted the opposition in three-set matches.
At No. 5, Miller won 6-2 in the opening set before falling 6-2 in the second. The senior responded with a 6-3 win in the deciding frame.
Embree's individual match clinched the overall dual victory for the Bluejays. The Coppell, Texas native, dropped a 6-2 first set before winning 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 6 slot to give Creighton its fourth point.
Nelsen ended the day with a win in the No. 3 position. She opened with a 6-4 win and fell 6-2 in the second, but won 6-3 in the third set to end the match with four consecutive Creighton victories.
The Jays and Sugar Bears will matchup at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning at the Cooper Tennis Complex.

"We talked a lot about getting stronger mentally during the big points and handling pressure that happens during close sets and matches; for the most part we did very well with that," head coach Tom Lilly said. "Our doubles came out strong, but I knew Missouri State would play better singles.
"I'm proud of how we competed, especially our two seniors, Hylan Miller and Katherine Nelsen, dealing with their opponents playing well in the second sets. It's not easy to get momentum back in those situations, but we did well today."
