Bluejays score twice by taking advantage of errors and using small ball
AUBURN, Ala. -- The Creighton softball team did not record a hit but managed to score two runs during a 3-2 loss against Evansville on Sunday morning at the Plainsman Invitational in Auburn, Ala.
The Bluejays dropped to 2-8 on the season, and the Purple Aces improved to 1-4.
Evansville's Morgan Florey struck out 10, did not walk a batter and allowed two unearned runs as she picked up her first victory of the season with the no-hit performance.Â
After scoring only one run in eight innings against the Purple Aces on Saturday, Creighton scored a run in the bottom of the first to take an early lead.
Â
Aujanae McCoy led off the home half of the first by reaching on an error. She advanced to second on a wild pitch and took third with her third stolen base of the season.
Â
Tash Coffiel sent a ground ball to third base and reached via the second error of inning, allowing McCoy to score from third only two batters into Creighton's half of the first.
Both teams went quietly in the second before Evansville tied the game in the third. Florey helped her own cause and delivered with a single up the middle with the bases loaded to drive in the Purple Aces' first run of the game.
Â
Creighton escaped additional damage as Bryana Clark came on in relief with the bases still full and induced a double play to end inning.
The Bluejays and Purple Aces were held in check during the fourth and fifth innings, but Evansville broke the tie in the sixth.Â
Consecutive singles opened the top half of inning number six, and pinch-hitter Hayli Scott drove in the go-ahead runs with a double to right-center field, clearing the bases and giving the Purple Aces a 3-1 lead.
The two runs allowed by Clark were her first in 10.2 innings of work during two games against Evansville at the Plainsman Invitational.Â
Creighton trimmed the deficit to one in the bottom of the sixth thanks to small ball. McCoy reached on an error for the second time on Sunday and Coffiel bunted McCoy to third. Anna O'Gorman drove in her third run of the season with a sacrifice fly to left field to make it 3-2.
O'Gorman also added a sacrifice bunt during the first inning.Â
Sam Dellinger pitched a perfect top of the 7th for the Bluejays before Florey sat down Creighton in order in the bottom half, including her ninth and 10th strikeouts.
Florey, the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year, pitched a total of 14.1 innings during two starts against the Bluejays at the Plainsman Invitational and allowed two hits, three unearned runs, walked two and recorded 17 strikeouts while going 1-1.Â
