Omaha, Neb. -- An emotional night for Creighton's quartet of seniors ended as everyone had hoped, with a 67-60 win over St. John's on Feb. 19.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 20-6 on the season and 14-2 in BIG EAST play, while St. John's fell to 18-10 overall and 10-7 in conference action.
Sunday was the final home game for seniors Marissa Janning, MC McGrory, Brianna Rollerson and Lauren Works. One of the more touching moments of the evening came right out of the gate as McGrory, who was forced to end her career due to multiple concussion in December, returned to the starting lineup for the first three minutes. McGrory fired off one three-pointer before giving way to junior Sydney Lamberty.
Billed as a battle of defensive teams, the contest began with a flurry of made shots in the first period. Each team shot better than 60% during the first five minutes of play, while the Bluejays held an 11-10 edge at the first media timeout. The Bluejays earned an inch of space with a 5-0 coming out the timeout via a layup from junior Kylie Brown and a three-ball by Lamberty. Creighton held the gap to the end of the first quarter, 20-16.
The second period saw the defenses assert themselves, with each team shooting 33% or below in the second. Creighton connected for two free throw to open the frame, yet the Red Storm responded to knot the game at 24-24 (6:30). With the momentum turning, Lamberty hit a jumper from the elbow to keep the Red Storm at arm's length. Leading 27-26 moments later (3:49), Creighton closed the period with a 6-0 run on a traditional three-point play from Rollerson and three free throws from Janning to take a 33-26 lead into the break.
Similar to the second quarter, Creighton pushed its lead to its largest margin quickly on a drive and bonus free throw from Janning (36-28 with 7:41). St. John's, however, chipped away for the remainder of the period as the contest went to the fourth with Creighton holding a one-point edge, 47-46.
The Red Storm reclaimed the lead on the opening possession of the fourth on a second-chance layup from Jade Walker. Hitting just one of its first 15 from long range, the urgency of the final period set in. With 6:41 showing on the clock, Lamberty stepped up once more to drain an open trey to give the Bluejays back the advantage. Following a defensive stop, sophomore Audrey Faber connected from downtown to give Creighton a 53-48 (6:10).
St. John's responded with four straight to get back within one (53-52), but Creighton held St. John's at bay from the free throw line, hitting 10-of-12 (83.3%) down the stretch. The final straw for Creighton's senior bash came with just over two minutes left (2:08). Leading 57-54 Faber drove the lane and delivered a layup late in the shot clock. After a defensive stop, Lamberty knocked down a pull-up Jumper from the elbow to make it 61-54 with 0:57 seconds left.
Janning all scorers with 20 points, also grabbing six rebounds and six assists. Lamberty delivered 17 points, while Faber finished with 15. St. John's got 18 from Jade Walker in the loss.
Creighton will close out the regular season with back-to-back road games, beginning at Xavier on Friday, Feb. 24. The game will tip at 6:03 pm and will be broadcast on Fox Sports 2.
