Bluejays never trail in 87-70 victory
OMAHA, Neb. -- Marcus Foster scored a career-high 35 points as No. 20 Creighton men's basketball never trailed in an 87-70 win over Georgetown on Sunday afternoon.
Creighton (22-5, 9-5 BIG EAST), which scored a season-low 51 points in a January 25th loss to the Hoyas, put up 41 points in the first half and 46 more after the break en route to earning the season split over Georgetown (14-13, 5-9 BIG EAST).
Five points from Cole Huff and four by Davion Mintz helped propel Creighton to an early 11-4 lead. The margin would grow to as large nine points on four different occasions in the first half. Georgetown drew within 37-33 with 1:16 to go in the first half before Creighton scored the final four points of the period to take a 41-33 lead into the break. Foster led all players with 15 points in the opening 20 minutes.
Five points from LJ Peak helped Georgetown trim the Bluejay lead to three (41-38) in the opening minute of the second half, but that would be as close as the visitors would come. A 12-2 run that included three baskets by freshman Justin Patton and a trey by Khyri Thomas helped bury the Hoyas. The lead would remain nine or more the rest of the contest, eventually growing as large as 19 (87-68) after a trifecta from Foster in the final minute that was enough to give the junior guard a career-high.
Foster's 35 points came on 13-of-19 shooting, including 4-of-6 from downtown, and 5-of-8 marksmanship at the line. Foster also added five rebounds and five assists in 36 minutes of work. His output was the most by a Bluejay since Huff had 35 points in the 2016 BIG EAST Tournament against Seton Hall, four more than his previous season-high, and one more than his career-high done as a freshman (vs. #15 Texas on 2/8/14) at Kansas State.
Isaiah Zierden added 13 points off the bench, while Huff and Patton both tallied 10 points. Creighton shot 53.1 percent for the game, including 9-of-20 from downtown, and had 17 assists.
Georgetown was led by 23 points from Peak, while Rodney Pryor added 16. Omaha native Akoy Agau finished with nine points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots in 22 minutes off the bench.
Creighton returns to the floor on Wednesday at 8:01 pm when it hosts Providence.
