Bluejays defeated the Purple Aces 1-0 in eight innings before falling 9-0 to the Tigers
AUBURN, Ala. – The Creighton softball team picked up an extra-inning walk-off win over Evansville before falling to No. 2 Auburn on Saturday at the Plainsman Invitational in Auburn, Ala.
The Bluejays defeated the Purple Aces 1-0 in eight innings, and lost 9-0 in five innings against the Tigers.
Creighton is now 2-7 this season.
The Bluejays opened the day with a dramatic finish in their final at-bat.
In the bottom of the eighth, Mikaela Pechar started on second base because of the enforcement of the International Tiebreaker Rule.
Sam Crowley advanced Pechar to third with a sacrifice bunt, bringing up the top of the order for the Jays.
On a full count, Creighton lead-off hitter Aujanae McCoy sent a ground ball to the Evansville shortstop. The shortstop fired the ball towards home plate, but Pechar beat the throw to score the winning run.
Bryana Clark picked up her second win of the season in a complete-game performance. The reigning BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week tossed eight innings without allowing a run. She also gave up only four hits, struck out six and walked one.
Evansville's Morgan Florey was equally as impressive, pitching 7.1 innings and allowing only two hits and one unearned run with seven strikeouts and two walks.
Creighton had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh. Anna O'Gorman led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Jen Daro. Jessica Lewis pinch ran for O'Gorman at second, but did not advance to third as Florey ended the inning by forcing consecutive pop outs.
The Bluejays finished the afternoon with three sacrifice bunts, including Crowley's that advanced the eventual winning run to third base.
The Purple Aces advanced their eighth-inning base runner to third base on a fly out to center field, but Clark picked up her sixth strikeout of the game to strand the runner at third prior to the Jays' dramatic bottom-half of the final frame.
Saturday afternoon's victory marked Creighton's first walk-off since April 13, 2016 when the Bluejays defeated Iowa State 1-0 on an RBI-single from Mileah McKelvy in the bottom of the seventh.
Following her victory against the Purple Aces, Clark started the nightcap against Auburn.
The junior retired the first four Tigers before three hitters reached on two walks and an error in the second inning.
Creighton nearly escaped the inning without allowing a run, but Victoria Draper beat out an infield single with two outs to drive in the first run of the ballgame and spell the end of Clark's outing.
Auburn added to the lead with an RBI single and base-clearing double off reliever Michal Hylton.
The Tigers put up three in the third and one in the fourth to extend their advantage to the final margin of nine.
Creighton did not have a base runner until the fifth inning when O'Gorman singled up the middle to break up Makayla Martin's perfect game.
Sam Dellinger made her debut in the circle as a Bluejay pitcher in the fourth inning.
Creighton concludes the Plainsman Invitational with a rematch against Evansville at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday morning.
