Birmingham, Ala. -- After taking an early 1-0 lead in the second, the Creighton Baseball team suffered a 5-1 loss to UAB on Saturday, Feb. 18.
The loss dropped Creighton to 0-2 on the season, while UAB moved to 2-0.
The Bluejays pushed across a run in the second on two singles and an errors. Sophomore Thomas Luevano reached on an error to open the frame. One out later, senior Bryce Only bounced an infield single towards third base to put runners at first and second. Freshman Will Robertson followed with an RBI single to left to bring home Luevano.
Creighton's defense allowed the Blazers to pull even with an unearned run in the third, then another via Creighton's second error in the fourth.
After ending the bottom of the fifth by cutting down Tyler Tolbert as he attempted to steal home, Creighton seemed poised to pull even as Luevano opened the sixth with a double. Unfortunately a failed sacrifice attempt led to Luevano getting cut down at third. With two down in the inning Only blasted a triple to right-center, but the Bluejays were unable to push across the tying run.
The momentum UAB gained in the top of the sixth carried over as the Blazers took advantage of two walks, a hit batter in the sixth to push their lead to 5-1 on an RBI single from Stephen Dobbs and a two-run double by Price Visintainter.
Bluejay starter Keith Rogalla suffered the loss (0-1), allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks over five innings. Blazer hurler Ryan Ruggles nabbed the win (1-0), limiting Creighton to one unearned run on four hits in five innings.
Only led the Bluejay offense with three hits, including a double and a triple.
Creighton will try to avoid suffering a season-opening sweep by UAB on Sunday, Feb. 19. First pitch is set for 1:00 pm.
