Creighton did not have a baserunner in five innings of play
TEMPE, Ariz. – Sierra Hyland's five perfect innings ended Creighton softball's trip in Tempe, Ariz., as Cal Poly run ruled the Bluejays 8-0 on Saturday morning.
The Bluejays ended their Kajikawa Classic appearance with a 1-4 record over three days.
Hyland finished the day without allowing a baserunner and striking out nine Bluejays. She also went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs at the plate.
Cal Poly got out to an early lead as the first two reached base to open the bottom of the first. The Mustangs scored one run on a fielder's choice, and added three more with a three-run home run from Hyland to end the opening frame with four runs.
The home team on the scoreboard ended the game with four runs in the fifth without recording an out.
Bryana Clark started the game in the circle for the Bluejays and suffered her first loss of the season after allowing four runs (three earned) off of four hits and striking out one.
Jenny Hittinger pitched two innings of relief and gave up five hits and four runs (two earned). Hittinger retired six of the first seven batters she faced.
Saturday morning's game lasted one hour and ten minutes. The contest marked the shortest game by time that the Bluejays have played since April 22, 2007 when Creighton and Illinois State played to a 1-1 tie in a game that lasted one hour and one minute and was called because of rain after five complete innings.
Creighton returns to the road next weekend when it plays at the Plainsman Invitational in Auburn, Ala. The Bluejays open the event against Mercer at 9:45 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 17.
