Bluejays Seize Game with 30-Point Third Quarter
Omaha, Neb. -- Behind a program-record 17 three-pointers, including a 30-point effort in the third quarter, the Creighton women's basketball team defeated Providence 88-57 on Saturday, Feb. 11.
Creighton moved to 18-6 on the season with the victory and 12-2 in BIG EAST play, while Providence fell to 10-15 overall and 2-12 in conference action.
Down 7-5 after the opening moments (7:29), the Bluejays took control of the game early with an 11-0 run over 149 seconds. Senior Brianna Rollerson got things rolling with a traditional three-point play, dropping in a layup and the bonus free throw. Freshman Jaylyn Agnew followed with a trey from the top of the key to make it 11-7 (6:22). The Bluejays continued to knock down the three-ball, with sophomore Audrey Faber knocking down the next shot from long range. Finally senior Marissa Janning capped the run with a driving layup to make it 16-7 (5:00).
Providence had crawled back to within one possession midway through the second (25-22 at 5:42), causing the Bluejays to respond with an 8-0 surge. Junior Myah Mellman stopped the Friars' charge with a trifecta from the left wing. The next trip for Creighton saw Rollerson drop in another bucket on the interior, finally Janning drained a trey from the right wing to get the Bluejays back out by double-digits (33-22) with 2:45 left in the half. Creighton went to the locker room at the break holding a 38-29 edge.
The Bluejays returned to the floor en fuego, scoring the first 11 to turn a nine-point lead into 20 at 49-29. Junior Sydney Lamberty started the 11-0 run with a trey, then dropped in another surrounding a mid-range jumper from Janning. Faber capped the run with the Bluejays' 11th three-pointer of the contest. The Bluejays continued to shoot the lights out of the gym throughout the third, pushing their lead to as much as 29 points (66-37 with 1:34) as Creighton shot 66.7% from the field in the quarter. Faber outscored Providence in the period, 15-11, while the Bluejays had their second largest output in a quarter with 30 points.
Creighton coasted through the final frame, pushing its lead to as much as 34 (85-51 with 2:16 left). The Bluejays finished the contest with a program record 17 treys, led by five from Faber.
Faber led the Bluejays with a game-high 21 points. Three other Bluejays reached double-figures; Janning with 14, Lamberty with 13 and Agnew with 10. Providence got 13 points from Nogic and 12 from Ny'Dajah Jackson.
The Bluejays return to action on Friday, Feb. 17 when Creighton hosts Seton Hall at 7:00 pm.
